This article examines over three hundred and sixty pieces of the existing fabric of the Dunhuang Banners held in the collections of The British Museum,England;Victoria & Albert Museum,Musèe Guimet,Frence;The State Hermitage Museum,Russia;Dunhuang Academy and Lüshun Museum,China respectively,and makes a careful study of those Dunhuang Banners which are dating from The Tang Dynasty step by step by following aspects:the constructive form,materials in making of Banners,decorative measures.By the way of study,this article draws out a conclusion that there are mainly two types of banner in constructive form:a hanging banner with many fringes at the ends and a banner with a swallow-tailed ends,these two types of banner have had a very contract difference in size from 32.3cm high to 263.3cm high,using texture of silk,cotton fabrics and hemp to making them,decorative measure found to be silk painting,embroidery,polygenetic dyeing.This article has also discussed some more issues on printing process and practical purposes of those Dunhuang banners.
