Based on previous studies by research fellows,this article attempts to corroborate the information recorded in the Dunhuang manuscript P.2991,Construction Records of the Baoenjixiang Cave,which records monk Zhenguo’s meritorious construction of the Baoenjixiang Cave.P.2991 mentions the idea of ’returning parents’ kindness’ and the main image group of Vairocana with the Eight Great Bodhisattvas in a location called Fuyang(富[當]陽).Through comparative textual research and on-site investigation,the author concludes that Mogao Cave 234 is most likely to be the Baoenjixiang Cave recorded in P.2991.
