Yunnan grottoes flourished along with the introduction of Buddhism into the Province. The earliest grottoes and bas-reliefs on precipices of Yunnan appeared in Fengyou Time of Nanzhao Kingdom, which was proved by the creation of the front of the square base for No.1 Amitabha Statue in Shadingqing, Shizhongshan, Jianchuan county. The creation started in late Tang Dynasty and enjoyed further development in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The engraving demonstrated five unique techniques. In the past, insufficient research and propaganda brought about the poor situation of Yunnan grottoes and bas-reliefs on precipices in China's history of grotto arts. Further development in this domain requires systematic and thorough research work.
