The interpretation of characters is important in understanding the Contemplation of Amitayus Sutra. However, it is Soga Ryojin's view that all characters in it are ordinary beings. This interpretation is different from that of Shinran. Especially, Soga's view of Sakyamuni Buddha appears singular. Therefore the purpose of this study is to research Soga's view of Sakyamuni Buddha in the Contemplation of Amitayus Sutra in his works by three steps. First, Soga had to interpret and write about Sakyamuni Buddha because of the historical background of "modern culture" against Buddhism. Second, Soga's thought was based on the standpoint of Shinshu, which includes the teaching of the Two Honored Ones. Therefore, based on this teaching, Soga thought that Sakyamuni Buddha was only an ordinary being. Third, Soga did not define Sakyamuni Buddha as an ordinary being as a different position than that of Shinran. Soga and Shinran used different words, but their view of Sakyamuni Buddha was the same. Soga disclosed Shinran's view of the Contemplation of Amitayus Sutra. In sum, Soga's view of Sakyamuni Buddha reflects a meaning of a religious subject and object.
