Lee Gyugyeong (1788-1856) of Korea's Joseon Dynasty authored Random Expatiations of Oju (Wuzhou yanwen changjian sangao) and My Remarks on Poetry (Shijia diandeng). Both works comprise rich materials related to Buddhism. This essay analyzes some of the most interesting aspects of Lee Gyugyeong's understanding of Buddhism, including his views on the introduction of Buddhism into Korea, its various sects, the concept of reincarnation, the origin of the stone money in Journey to the West, and the interrelationship between Buddhism and poetics. It argues that Lee's writings have important academic values in the study of the exchange history concerning Buddhism and poetics between China and Korea.
