In this paper, I have will discuss and clarify the differences found in the basic understanding between Tʼan-luan and aochuo with regard to the teachings on the Budda-body and the Buddha-land. With regard to these teachings, Tʼan-luan discussed “Amidaʼs Pure Land” from the perspective of the Bodhisattvas and “those aspiring to be born” from the perspective of their being embraced in the Great Compassion of Amida’s Pure Land. On the other hand, Daochuo discussed them from the perspective of Amitābhaʼs Buddha, thereby revealing the principles of practices involved with oneʼs “birth in the pure land”(Ōjō Jōdo). These differences mean that T’an-luan revealed teachings for the Pure Land aspirants who are already embraced in Amitābhaʼs great compassion, while Daochuo revealed teachings for the Pure Land aspirants who are not yet embraced by Amitābhaʼs great compassion.
