摘要  星雲大師自西元1949年來臺至今七十年,發揚「人間佛教」理念,將佛教帶往現代化的新里程碑。大師「人間佛教」的理念 有兩大特色:一在熔鑠古今,重視文學與中國傳統文化;一在現代化,以興學教育與各種現代傳播方式進行人文建設,推展佛教文化。一般都說:「太虛大師是人間佛教的提倡者,星雲大師是人間佛教的實踐者。」我則認為,大師還有獨到處,那便是文學觀與文學創作,這是近代高僧所無法企及的。
  本文從「人間佛教」的緣起說起,梳理近代「臺灣」人間佛教的傳承與延續,來定位星雲大師「三好」、「四給」的說法正是佛教人間性、生活性、利他性、喜樂性、普濟性、時代性的走向。大師在近代太虛大師、印順法師等「人間佛教」的遺澤中,以現代化系統化的創新思想理論,具體實踐佛陀示教利喜本懷的弘法模式。大師最獨特的地方正是「人間佛教」的文學觀與文學實踐。
根據本文的觀察,大師一生弘法佈教的工作都離不開文學,其文學觀可以歸納為:一、回歸佛陀本懷,以文學為佛事;二、應機說法,語言與文體求新;三、植根中國文化傳統,落實生活文學等三大特色。大師的文學實踐則從《菩提樹》雜誌時期被譽為「佛教的文藝明星」開始,作品涵蓋詩偈、散文、小說、文論、傳記等多種文體,大師的創作非常現代化,不僅善用報紙雜誌,音樂廣播,更強調運用通俗化的語言,以便於弘法。

  Venerable Master Hsing Yun has been implementing “Humanistic Buddhism” for seventy years since he moved from mainland China to Taiwan in 1949 and establishing a milestone of modernized Buddhism. The concept of Hsing Yun’s mode of " Humanistic Buddhism " has two major characteristics:
One is valuing literature and Chinese traditional culture by blending tradition and modern; the other is modernization by promoting Buddhist culture through humanities construction with education and various modern propagation modes. Although it was general speaking that, in Humanistic Buddhism, Master Tai Xu was an advocate and Venerable Master Hsing Yun was a practitioner, I rather found Venerable Master Hsing Yun the unique view and creation in literature which was not able to be matched by other Sanghas in the modern time.
  Beginning with introduction of the origin of “Humanistic Buddhism” and following with sorting out the inheritane and continuation of Humanistic Buddhism in Taiwan, the study manifested that the concept promoted by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, “Three Acts of Goodness” and “the Four Givings”, would be definitely the trends of Buddhism toward the nature of humanity, life, altruism, joy, equal relief and modern era. Nurturing the “Humanistic Buddhism” legacy of Master Tai Xu and Venerable Yinshun, Venerable Master Hsing Yun has been extraordinarily implementing the original intents of Buddha that Buddha had intended by being born and teaching the Dharma in this world for discovery of greater happiness and perfection of life. The way Venerable Master Hsing Yun used for such the
implementation was the modernized and systemized creative
concept; however, the crucial unique spirit should be the literary
view and practice in “Humanistic Buddhism”.
  Venerable Master Hsing Yun has never been promoted
Dharma without literature. The observations of the study
concluded three characteristics in Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s
literary view: 1. practicing Humanistic Buddhism as literature
by holding true to the original intents of Buddha 2. promoting
Dharma according to the appropriate object and situation with
innovative language and stylistics 3. implementing life literature
based on Chinese cultural traditions. Venerable Master Hsing
Yun began his literary practice from the period of submission to
the Bodhi Tree Magazine when he was hailed as "the literary star
of Buddhism" and the works included poetry, prose, theoretical
literary, biography, etc. propagated with various modernized
modes such as newspaper, magazine, music, broadcast, especially
with popular language enabling the ease of Dharma promotion.
