Prajñāpradīpa-ṭīkā 第 XXIV 章テキストと和訳(2) — uttarapakṣa 1 —=The XXIVth Chapter of the Prajñāpradīpa-ṭīkā, Tibetan Text and Japanese Translation (2) —uttarapakṣa 1—
This is our second part of the critical Tibetan text and Japanese translation of Avalokitavrata’s Prajñāpradīpa-ṭīkā chapter XXIV, which is a subcommentary on Nāgārjuna’s Mūlamadhyamakakārikā. It deals with the “Two Truths Theory” of Avalokitavrata (and also Bhaviveka). We try to clarify the structure of “Two Truths”, especially the multi-layered ultimate truth (paramārtha), which is influenced by the Yogācāra text Madhyāntavibhāga-bhāṣya. It is perceived in general that the theory of “Two Truths” is one of the most important doctrine of the Mādhyamika school. But we should pay attention to the fact that not only that school but also Sarvāstivādin, Sautrāntika and Yogācāra have their own original theories of “Two Truths” and explain their central doctrines by “Two Truths”. In addition, when we read the Prajñāpradīpa we should refer to the Chinese translation of Sthiramati’s commentary on the Mūlamadhyamaka-kārikā (大乗中観釈論). This text is in Taisho daizokyo (大正大蔵経, only chapters 1–13), Korai daizokyo (高麗大蔵経), and Manji zokyo (卍蔵 経). It is known that the Prajñāpradīpa and the commentary of Sthiramati are remarkably similar. In fact, regarding the part we read this time they do not differ much. It is a necessity to prepare a comparative study of the two texts in detail.
