By referring to the cartouche traces of the original image and related Buddhist scriptures, this paper attempts to divide the painting of the Mahāsattva Jataka tale in Mogao cave 419 into 38 scenes for plot marking, and to present supplementary interpretation on some unique contents in the painting. As this research shows, it can be seen that the preface and ending part of the tale are depicted respectively at the top and bottom of the painting, thus making it much complete than earlier works. A careful reading of the preface scene suggests that this painting is similar to its counterparts in Kashmir and ancient Gaochang, and that the preface scene is very likely a representation of the Chapter of Vyakarana from the Suvarnaprabhasottamasutra(Golden Light Sutra.)
