Wumen Cave is a natural karst cave at Nangaofeng in Hangzhou. However, at the right side of entrance was found an incomplete arched niche with five broken sculptures inside. On a wall in the inside of the cave, eighteen sculptures of Buddhist Arhat were found. Carved in a local folk style they are very rare sculptures created during the Ming Dynasty in Hangzhou. Another two sculptures of Buddhist Arhat were also found at the side of the entrance and were created in the Qing Dynasty. It is the first time that relevant information about these sculptures has been published and they are also significant in the research on the history of creating Buddhist sculptures in Hangzhou. |
