혜암성관(慧菴性觀) 대종사는 가야산 정진불로 불릴 정도로 평생을 수행자의 삶으로일관하였다. 그 자신은 ‘이 뭣고(是甚麽)’ 화두를 들고 ‘장좌불와(長座不臥)’와 ‘일일일식(一日一食)’을 실천하면서, 대중에게는 “공부하다 죽어라”라고 가르쳤다. 그러나 본고는혜암성관의 삶을 불교수행자가 아닌 종단개혁가의 측면에서 조명한다. 현재 그에 대한연구들은 수행자로서의 삶에 편중되어있다. 그러나 혜암성관은 1947년 당대의 불교개혁운동이었던 봉암사 결사에 동참하였고, 1994년 개혁불사 시에는 개혁종단의 견인차 역할을 하였고, 1998년 정화개혁회의로 인한 종단분규 시에는 개혁종단의 버팀목 역할을하였다. 그는 1994년과 1998년 원로회의 의장이었다. 하지만 종단개혁가로서 그의 활동에 대한 연구는 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있다. 이에 본고는 ‘부처님 법대로 살자’는봉암사 결사 이래 행해진 혜암성관의 일련의 종단개혁 활동을 연구한다.
Hyeam Seonggwan (慧菴性觀), the most venerable master, led an exemplary life dedicated to Buddhist practice, so much so that he was called the Buddha of effort in Gaya Mt. Under Word-head (the point of a question) “What is this One-thing?”, he practiced “Sitting meditation without lying down (長座不臥)” and “One meal per day (一日一食),” and taught the public that they should “Do practice to die” This paper, however, examines the life of Hyeam Seonggwan as a reformer of Korean Buddhist orders, and not a Buddhist practitioner, contrary to existing studies on him that focus on the latter. In 1947, Hyeam Seonggwan joined the Bongam temple association, which was the organization for the Buddhist reform movement of the time, and was the driving force behind the reformation order during the Buddhist-work for reform in 1994. In 1998, during Buddhist order disputes caused by the Purification Reform Meeting, he served as one of the key supports of the reformation order. He was the Chairman of Board of Elders in 1994 and 1998. Yet, few studies focus on his activities as a Buddhist order reformer. Thus, this paper examines a series of such activities of Hyeam Seonggwan since the establishment of the Bongam temple association under the motto “To lead a life in accordance with the Buddha’s teaching.”
