玄空黙庵(尹柱逸, 1895-1969)의 『불교의 우주론』은 1965년에서 1967년 사이에 광주 관음사(불교보문회)와 전주 승암사 등에서 강의교재로 제시된 것으로 현재 영인본으로 전하고 있다. 본고는 영인본에 포함된 4건의 문헌을 검토하여 『불교의 우주론』의 체계와 구성을 전체적으로 검토하고, 몇 가지 사상적 특징을 살펴보았다. 현공은 『불교의 우주론』을 통해 心造萬有의 원리를 우주 창조의 원리로 천명하고 만유의 현상과 본체를 각각 연기론과 실상론의 교리 체계를 통해 정리하고자 했다. 『불교의 우주론』은 심오한 불교교리를 도해 등을 활용하여 일목요연하게 정리함으로써 불교학개론서의 역할에도 충실했다. 또한 불교의 우주론을 제종교의 우주론과 대비하여 비판과 회통을 시도하였다. 즉 神 중심의 유신론적 종교를 비판하고, 무신론적 종교인 天 중심의 유교와 자연 중심의 도교는 심조만유의 입장에서 회통을 시도하였다. 마지막으로 연기론과 실상론의 관계를 ‘性起論的 緣起論’으로 종합함으로써 화엄의 입장을 최상의 가르침으로 부각시키고자 했다.
The Buddhist Cosmology was written by Hyeongong Mukam (1895-1969, Ju-il Yun) as a series of lectures at Gwanum-Sa Temple (Bulgyo-Bomun-hwoi) in Gwangju and Seungam-Sa Temple in Jeonju from 1965 to 1967. In this paper, I examine the digital edition of The Buddhist Cosmology including four different versions as well as its structure and several doctrinal characteristics. In the Buddhist Cosmology, Hyeongong clarified “the principle of everything created by our mind” (心 造萬有論) as that of the creation of the universe, and presented the Buddhist teachings of co-arising and original reality for explaining phenomenon and hypostasis. He organized various profound Buddhist teachings in an easily accessible manner using explanatory diagrams, so that the text could be used as a faithful introduction to Buddhist studies. Rather, he attempted to critique other religious cosmology and align it with Buddhist cosmology. That is to say, he criticized theistic religions and compared it with atheistic religions, for example Confucianism based on the Heavens (天) and Taoism based on Mother Nature (自然). Lastly he emphasized Hwaeom’s viewpoint as a superior teaching by integrating the theory of original reality and the theory of co-arising as the ‘theory of co-arising based on nature-arising’.
