摘要
石顚의 戒律觀 특징은 두 가지 측면에서 정리될 수 있다. 첫째는 『戒學約詮』을 통해서 三學一元이란 兼全思想의 견지에서 승가교육에 전념하였다. 둘째는 『범망경』과 『유교경』의 대중적 유교법회를 통해서 깨달음의 사회화를 추구하여 대중교화를 실천하였다. 또한 『대일경소』와 『무외삼장선요』, 『능엄경』 등의 밀교 경전을 통해서 禪戒兼修와 禪密兼修도 함께 추구하여 삼학을 고루 섭렵하는 兼學思想으로 귀결됨을 살펴보았다. 다음에 『戒學約詮』의 특성은 대소승의 계율과 선경을 기술하여 선종의 정체성을 나타낸 것이다. 이는 바로 당시 승단과 대사회적으로 계율의 준수가 바로 청정을 강조하고 다음에 자비를 실현하여 정직한 교단과 사회를 이루는 의도임을 천명하였다. 이러한 『戒學約詮』의 특성은 제교를 회통하여 삼매를 통과해서 완전한 깨달음을 추구하는 정체성을 확보함과 동시에 원교의 원융한 계학의 승단교육과 대사회의 깨달음을 실현하여 현실의 정토를 구현고자 함을 고찰하였다. 끝으로 『戒學約詮』의 意義는 중국의 남산율종과 영명연수로 이어진 계율의 전통과 고대한국의 자장율사와 진표율사로부터 서산휴정과 환성지안으로 면면히 이어진 서상수계의 전통 계율을 계승하면서 원융무애한 會通佛敎를 지향하였다. 나아가 현대에 있어서 석전의 『戒學約詮』에 드러난 회통불교적인 意義는 三學一元의 三門修學과 兼全思想의 나아갈 청정승가와 깨달음의 사회화에 중점에 두고 있다. 이는 계율을 통한 개인의 청정과 더불어 자리이타의 대승의 심지법문의 대사회적 깨달음의 실현임을 살펴보았다. 이상과 같은 고찰에서 우리는 현대와 미래의 한국불교의 나아갈 길은 삼학의 겸학을 통한 개인의 깨달음에 반드시 戒體를 형성하여 좋은 인과를 맺고 나아가 사회의 깨달음을 실현함에도 계율은 그 지남이 됨을 부인할 수 없다. 따라서 우리는 석전의 원융한 계율을 본보기로 禪敎, 禪戒, 禪密의 겸전수행을 통해서 한국전통불교를 유지하면서 개인의 견성성불과 더불어 깨달음의 사회화에 진력해야 하리라 여겨진다.
