摘要
국내 정토학 연구는 1960년대에 본격적으로 시작됐다. 이때 역사학자 안계현이 선구적인 역할을 했다. 이후 1985년 동국대 불교문화연구원이 『한국정토사상연구』를 편찬하여 비교적 포괄적으로 정토사상을 다뤘다. 1990년대 이후 역사학계에서는 김영미 같은 연구자가 지속적으로 정토사상이나 정토신앙을 연구했다. 또한 불교학계에서 주로 활동한 한보광과 이태원은 각각 정토사상과 정토신앙을 주로 연구대상으로 삼아 많은 연구 성과를 발표했다. 두 사람은 일본학계의 연구 성과를 꾸준히 국내에 소개했다. 1998년에는 『정토학연구』가 창간되어 정토학 연구를 종합했다. 1990년대 이후 정토학 연구는 양적으로 크게 성장했고, 정토학 내 다양한 분야에까지 관심이 확대됐다. 하지만 지금까지 국내 정토학 연구는 주로 한국 정토학 연구에 한정됐고, 방법론 면에서는 주로 역사학 방법론이나 문헌학 방법론이 동원됐다. 이런 한계를 극복하기 위해서는 지역적으로는 중국 정토학 연구가 좀더 밀도 있게 진행돼야 할 것이다. 또한 방법론 면에서 철학적 방법론이나 종교학적 방법론 등 새로운 방법론을 동원해야만 좀 더 진전된 성과를 낼 수 있을 것이다.
In Korea, serious Pure Land Buddhist Studies were undertaken from the 1960s. Historian Ahn Gye-hyeon played a leading role in it. Since 1990s, scholars from historical fields, like Kim Young-mi, continued to conduct and produce research on thoughts and faith of Pure Land Buddhism. Han Bo-gwang and Yi Tae-won mainly produced works on thoughts and beliefs of Pure Land Buddhism respectively. These two also continually introduced Japanese scholarship to Korean academia. Up to now, Pure Land Buddhist Studies conducted in Korea were often limited to Korean Pure Land Buddhism, and the research methodologies that were mainly used were historical or philological. To overcome these limitations, studies of Chinese Pure Land Buddhism should be conducted to an extent. Also, new mehodologies from other fields such as philosophy or religious studies should be incorporated into the studies to produce more extensive research.
