摘要
한국 불교학계가 서양철학과 마주하고 대화를 시도한 것은 불교학자들에 의해서가 아니라, 서양철학 전공의 학자들에 의해서이다. 이러한 흐름은 서양철학의 1세대에서부터 현재에 이르기까지 이어져 오고 있다. 1990년대 초에 번역서들이 국내에 소개되면서 국내학계에 서양철학과 불교에 대한 비교 연구에 본격적인 관심을 보이기 시작하며, 2000년대 이후에는 국내학자들의 저서와 논문이 다양하게 출판되고 있다. 연구의 성과물은 니체와 하이데거로 대표되는 독일 실존주의 철학과 불교의 비교연구가 전통적으로 가장 많다. 실존주의 철학과 선불교의 비교 연구가 주된 흐름이기는 하지만, 유식학의 핵심 교리뿐만 아니라, 화엄학까지도 확대되어 비교 연구되고 있다. 현상학과 불교의 비교 연구는 주로 훗설의 사상과 불교의 유식학의 비교 연구가 주류를 형성하고 있다. 독일 관념론의 대표주자라고 할 수 있는 칸트와 불교에 대한 비교 연구는 크게 불교의 무아설과 윤회가 양립할 수 있는가라는 문제와, 칸트의 인식론과 불교 인식론의 유사점과 차이점의 비교, 그리고 칸트와 불교철학의 실천윤리의 문제 등으로 나눌 수 있다. 현대철학과 관련하여서는 화이트헤드와 비트겐슈타인의 철학과 불교의 유사성을 비교하는 연구가 활발하다. 화이트헤드의 유기체 철학과 화엄불교를 비교하고 양자 간의 유사성과 상이성을 규명함으로써 두 사상의 지평 융합적 토대 근거를 마련하려고 한다. 비트겐슈타인과 불교의 비교연구는 일찍부터 여러 학자들에 의해서 부분적, 간헐적으로 지속되고 있으나, 아직까지 체계화되었다고 말하기에는 무리가 있다. 최근에는 한국 불교 사상가들과 서양 철학자를 비교하는 연구가 시도되고 있으며 앞으로도 지속될 것으로 전망된다. 불교와 서양철학의 비교 연구를 한층 심화시키기 위해서는 불교학자들의 적극적인 서양철학에 대한 학습과 연구의 필요성이 요구되며 동시에 집단적 지속적인 학습과 토론이 동반되어야 할 것이다.
This paper is to analysis of Buddhism and Western philosophy in Korean academia that attempts to extract important books and articles according to the chronological order as possible as. Buddhist philosophy and Western philosophy include several interesting parallels; before the 20th century, pioneering European philosophers had engaged with Buddhist philosophy and since then, there have been considerable interests by some eminent scholars in comparative approach between Buddhist philosophy and Western philosophy. Similarly, Korean Scholars investigate to comparative research between Buddhist philosophy and Western philosophy since 1990 which has been gradually spread of Korean academic world. Majority scholars in the comparative studies interpret Buddhism through the lens Western Existentialism such as Martin Heidegger Friedrich Nietzsche that is mainly focused on the similarity with Seon Buddhism and Yogacara doctrines. In addition Edmund Husserl’s conscious process from the subjective point of view has been studies with Buddhism. Immanuel Kant's Transcendental Idealism has also been compared with the philosophical approach of Buddhist doctrines such as non-self, Yogacara’s epistemology, The process philosophy of Alfred Whitehead has several convergent points with Buddhist philosophy by Buddhologist in recently. Ludwig Wittgenstein has been directly paralleled Madhyamaka school or Seon Buddhist conceptions from time to time. For more prosperous of Korean Buddhist academia Buddhologists necessary need to study and research on Western philosophy. Furthermore, scholars who are interested in comparative philosophical study have to be cooperated with each other consistently and systematically
