摘要
탄허는 현대불교사에서 역경, 교육 분야에서 특별한 행보를 구현한 고승이다. 그러나 그가 수행한 교육 활동, 의의, 성격에 대한 학술적인 검토는 미진하였다. 이는 다음과 같은 측면에서의 난점에서 기인한 것이다. 그는 탄허가 갖고 있는 정체성의 다양성, 탄허의 행적 및 지성을 전하는 자료적인 문제, 그가 수행한 교육 활동이 제도화되지 못한 재야성 등이다. 때문에 탄허의 교육 문제를 취급할 경우에는 이런 문제점을 충분히 인식해야 한다. 이런 전제에서 필자는 본 고찰에서 탄허 교육의 내용, 교육의 초점, 교육의 지표로 나누어 그 개요 및 성격을 살피고자 한다. 탄허교육의 내용에서는 儒彿仙 즉 동양사상의 전수라는 점을 주목할 것이다. 교육내용에서 강조점은 불교사상과 화엄사상에 있었는데, 실제 추진에 있어서는 엘리트주의, 개방성, 재야성이 드러났다. 교육의 초점에서는 求道와 宗旨를 강조하였다. 여기에서는 구도가 생활의 근원을 찾는 것이었으며, 모든 대중이 가능하였음을 정리하고자 한다. 종지는 학문과 구도를 행하는 핵심 본질이었음을 입증한다. 그리고 교육의 지표에서는 도의적 인재양성을 하는 연유를 분석한다. 탄허는 이상사회를 구현하고자 고민하였는데, 도의적 인재가 이상사회 건설 및 통일국가 지향의 주역으로 길러내는 것과 연결되었음을 살핀다. 이상의 분석에서 필자는 탄허의 교육을 불교를 정점으로 한 東洋思想의 生活化와 現在化이었으며, 그 당대의 시대성과 역사성을 통섭한 知性의 具體化라고 본다. 그런데 탄허교육은 그가 평생동안 추구한 화엄사상의 구현과 무관할 수는 없다. 그렇지만 현재 탄허의 화엄사상에 대한 전모, 특성에 대한 연구가 미약하기에 이 점은 본 고찰에서 다루지 못하였다. 이 점은 후일을 기약하고자 한다.
The prelate Tanheo had special achievements of Buddhist Translation and Education in history of modern Buddhism. But, there have been the lack of academic reviews about his educational activities, meaning and character of performances he had done. It's been caused by some difficult reasons below. There are diversity of identity Tanheo had, data problems with Tanheo's deeds ＆ intelligence, and the matter not be institutionalized with his educational activities he practiced. So, we need to know these things when we treat Tanheo's educational issues. Based on those difficulties, I want to remark with the outline and character dividing into the content of Tanheo's Education, the heart of education and the index of education in this essay. I will focus on Ryu byul zen(儒彿仙), the teaching of eastern thought in the content of Tanheo's education. The content of education stressed the points of Buddhist philosophy and Hwaom Idealism, but actually it was identified with elitism, openness and undemonstrativeness. The focus of education emphasized on Gu-do(求道, seeking the truth) and Jong-ji(宗旨, the purpose of religion). In essay, I'd like to define that Gu-do(求道, seeking the truth) was to find the origin of life and it was possible to all the public, proving that Jong-ji(宗旨, the purpose of religion) was the essential to do study and Gudo(求道, seeking the truth). And in the index of education, I analyze the reason to nurture moral-talent. Tanheo had been thinking over how an ideal society could be made, I studied that a moral man was connected with nurturing a leading role of establishing ideal society and fulfilling the aim for unified nation. With those analysis, I consider Tanheo's education as a way of life(生活化), realization(現在化) of Eastern thought(東洋思想) based on Buddhism, and materialization(具體化) of intelligence converging historicity and sociality in the time. But there is no irrelevant between Tanheo's education and Hwaom Idealism he tried to make in real through his life. But, as the research about all of the Tanheo's Hwaom Idealism and special character of his thought is still undergoing, I didn't deal with it in this essay. It might be a day later
