헤세에 대한 이해를 결여한 『싯다르타』의 불교적 편향 독법은 자칫 작품의 진면목을 반감시킬 수 있고, 나아가 작가의 깊은 정신세계를 오도할 우려가 크다. 본고는 『싯다르타』의 일독법으로서, 헤세의 사상에 대한 사전 조망을 바탕으로 주인공의 각성 내용에 주로 초점을 맞추어 여섯 국면의 독법을 새롭게 제시하였다. 이 세상의 삶을 가장 밑바닥까지 체험하면서 철저하게 내면의 길을 걸어 마침내 완성자에 이른 주인공의 구도 여정은 헤세의 인생체험이자 종교관의 투영이라고 말할 수 있다. 그것은 영적인 직관과 통찰을 통한 합일의 체험을 기반으로 하는 종교적 신비주의이다. 그리고 그 중심에는 각성의 내용인 내면의 목소리가 자리하고 있다. 주인공은 바라문의 아들로 출가하여 사문들 곁에서 고행을 통해 ‘배움은 존재하지 않는다는 것’을, 고타마의 설법에서 ‘진리는 가르칠 수 없다는 것’을, 속세의 본능적 삶 속에서 ‘윤회의 유희’를 깨닫는다. 반전은 극도의 절망에서 비롯되고, 따라서 그 절망은 완성을 향해 ‘제대로 난 길’이었다. 바주데바와 하나가 된 강물의 계시를 통하여 싯다르타는 ‘시간이란 존재하지 않는다’는 것을 깨닫고, 일체의 번뇌로부터 자유로워진다. 마침내 그는 ‘세계는 그대로 완전한 것’이라는 완성자의 경지에 도달하게 된다.
It is likely to misunderstand Siddhartha to read it of inclination to Buddhism without knowledge about the author, Hesse. This essay focuses on the six-stage of reading from understanding the awakening process of hero in the novel on the basis of author's thought about the world. The hero has walked only on the inside, undergoing the very bottom of the society. Journey seeking after truth of hero is the reflecting of Hesse's life experience and religious belief. It is religious mysticism on the foundation of unio-mystica through spiritual insight. And voices of awakening on the inside settle at the center of mysticism. The hero realizes “there is no learning anywhere” through ascetic practice by śramaṇa, “truth is not taught” through Gauthama's preaching and “instinctive ordinary life is the same as childish game in saṁsāra." Turning over arises from the extreme dispair, so the dispair is a right way to perfection paradoxically. He also realizes “there is no time” in the revelation of river united with a boatman mystically, so is freed from all the kleśa. At last, he attains a mental stage of perfecter that realizes “world is completeness as it is.”
