Choe Nam-seon, who was the only one among the three to experience Europe through indirect routes, resisted the negative views about Korea and Korean Buddhism that the Europeans held, and furthermore, formulated “Korean Buddhism” against Japan’s degradation of Korea as a nation, while at the same time utilizing the accomplishments of European Buddhist studies. His Buddhist studies was Buddhist research as a form of Korean studies.
