본 고찰은 20세기 한국불교를 대표하는 고승인 탄허의 시대인식과 종교관을 분석하는 논고이다. 그러나 탄허는 대강백, 대종사, 역경가, 선사, 유불선을 회통한 도인 등 다양하게 불리웠지만 탄허에 대한 정체성은 정립되지 않았다. 이는 탄허연구가 본격화되지 않은 것에서 기인하지만, 탄허가 갖고 있는 다양성, 성격이 간단치 않은 것도 작용한다. 본 고찰에서는 이런 내용에 유의하면서 탄허의 정체성을 이해하기 위해서 그의 삶에 드러난 시대인식과 종교관을 살펴보려고 한다. 탄허는 승려이었지만 삶의 과정, 학문, 발언, 증언 등을 종합하면 그는 일반적인 승려와는 다른 특별한 측면이 있다. 필자가 찾고자 하는 것은 바로 '특별한 측면'이 무엇인가 하는 점이다. 필자는 탄허의 삶을 시대별로 구분하고, 그 시대별로 나타난 탄허의 시대인식 및 종교관을 살피려고 한다. 그러나 직접적인 자료가 부족하여, 그를 타개하기 위해 역사적 맥락하의 상상력을 활용하고자 한다. 이 논고는 탄허 개인의 연구, 오대산 불교문화의 탐구, 승려이면서 지성인으로서 민족과 사회에 대한 관심의 표출의 사례 등에 참고가 될 것이다.
The paper is an assertion that analysis Tan huh's recognition of period and religious view who was a high priest representing Korean Buddhism of the 20th century. In spite of the fact that Tan huh was recognized with various names such as Daegangbaek, Daejongsa, person of adversity, seonsa, ascetic who balanced Confucianism, Buddhism and mission, there was no identity theorized about Tan huh. It is because research about Tan huh has not been carried in depth but it is also influenced by Tan huh's dynamic and intricated characteristics. While paying attention to such issues, this paper aims to study his recognition of period and religious view shown on his life in order to understand Tan huh's identity. Tan huh was a monk but he had a special aspect with other monks when we understand his life progress, study, discourses, testimonies in general. The paper questions to find what that 'special aspect' is. The paper will categorize Tan huh's life divided into periods and study Tan huh's recognition of period and religious view shown in each period. However, hortage of raw resources, the paper will use imagination based on historical fact in order to overcome the weaknesses. This paper will become a reference in research of Tan huh, investigation of Buddhism culture of Mt. Odaesan and case studies of interests shown in nationality and society of a monk who was also an intellectual.
