The life of Lingbian, Huayan Scholar in the Northern Wei Dynasty, is recorded in most detail in Fazang’s The Biography of Lingbian. However, having investigated the involved contents about Lingbian’s life in Hua-yan-jing-shu (The Commentary on the Mahāvaipulya Buddhāvataṃsaka Sūtra) and Yan-yi-chao written by Chengguan, as well as considered the situation of Buddhism in the Northern Wei Dynasty, it is found that most of the contents in The Biography of Lingbian are fictional. The fictional descriptions in The Biography of Lingbian by Fazang may have a lot to do with the dispute between the Huayan thought of Wutai Shan Sect and Zhongnan Shan Sect appeared in Tang Dynasty.
