元干涉期 고려불교계의 큰 변화 중 하나는 天台宗寺院의 급격한 성장과 발전이었다. 그 주요사원으로 중앙의 妙蓮寺, 國淸寺 지방의 金藏寺,龍巖寺, 瑩源寺 元 大都의 光敎寺 등을 들 수 있다. 忠烈王과 齊國公主의 發願으로 창건된 묘련사는 天台宗의 중심사원인 동시에 元皇室의 중심願堂으로 기능하여 천태종이 親元的 성향을 띠는데 결정적인 역할을 하였다. 국청사는 無畏丁午의 住持를 계기로 하여 忠宣王忠肅王代에 천태종의 중심사원으로 성장하였다. 금장사, 용암사, 영원사 등은 丁午와 義旋이 주석하게 되면서 지방 소재의 주요 천태종사원으로 발전하였다. 그리고 光敎寺는 元 大都에 소재한 高麗系의 천태종사원이었다. 忠烈王代에는 천태종의 묘련사와 함께 禪宗의 麟角寺, 法相宗의 桐華寺가 각 종파를 대표하는 사원으로 성장하여 세 宗派가 불교계의 유력한 세력이 되었다. 그리고 忠宣王忠肅王代에는 국청사를 위시한 천태종사원이 흥성하였고 동화사를 비롯한 法住寺, 金山寺는 법상종의 주요사원으로 성장하였다. 여기서 인각사는 충렬왕 때 一然의 下山所가 되어 禪門을 결집시키는 역할을 하였고, 동화사는 충렬왕충숙왕대에 宗室勢力의 경제적 기반이 되었으며 또 國尊 惠永과 彌授가 주석한 사원이었다. 원간섭기의 시대적 한계성이 親元 성향이 강한 천태종사원에 기반을 둔 天台宗의 中興을 불러온 것이었다.
In the period of Yuan(元) intervention, one of the great changes in Buddhist community was remarkable growth and development of Cheontaejong(天台宗) temples. As the main temples we can name Myoryonsa(妙蓮寺), Gukcheongsa(國淸寺) in the capital region, Geumjangsa(金藏寺), Yongamsa(龍巖寺), Yeongwonsa(瑩源寺) in the local region, and Gwanggyosa(光敎寺) in Daedo(大都), the capital of Yuan. Specially because Myoryonsa, which was developed by King Ch'ungryl(忠烈) and Yuan princess Jaeguk(齊國), was the major memorial hall of the Yuan imperial house as well as the central temple of Cheontaejong, it played a key role in wearing pro-Yuan inclination of Cheontaejong. In the reign of King Ch'ungryl Cheontaejong, Sonjong(禪宗) and Beopsangjong(法相宗) became the influential Buddhist sects on the basis of each central temple, such as Myoryonsa, Ingaksa(麟角寺), and Donghwasa(桐華寺). In the reign of King Ch'ungson(忠宣) and King Ch'ungsuk(忠肅) many Cheontaejong temples, including Gukcheongsa, were thriving. Also Beopjusa(法住寺) and Geumsansa(金山寺) were developed as the main temples of Beopsangjong. However, the development of Sonjong temples were sluggish. The periodical limitation of the Yuan intervention period brought the revival of Cheontaejong that was based on Cheontaejong temples which were very much pro-Yuan. On the other hand, it resulted in the dullness of Sonjong that was less pro-Yuan than Cheontaejong.
