<大韓佛敎曹溪宗> 전통과 국제적 위상 확립을 위한 緖論: 「宗憲」에 보이는 正體性의 보편성과 특수성 一考=Tradition and International Recognition of Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism: Universality and Particularity of Its Identity in the Constitution

다양한 종파가 혼재한 지구촌 상황에서, 깨달음을 이루고 그에 의하여 안심입명과 평화로운 세상을 이루려는 불교적 삶이 서구문명이 주도한 현대의 한계와 위기를 극복할 수 있는 미래의 희망으로 주목받고 있다. 한국불교를 대표하는 조계종의 위상이 시대의 여망 속에 국제적으로 잘 정립되기 위하여 어떻게 하여야 할까 하는 모색의 일단을 담론의 실마리로 내놓아 본다. 먼저 조계종 종헌의 관련부분을 음미하며 조계종의 불교적 보편성과 특수성을 살펴보고자 했다. 2, 500여 년 전 인도로부터 석존에서 비롯된 근원적 불교의 지혜로 실존적 문제의 해결 및 인격을 완성함과 아울러 구세 대비 원력으로 보살행을 해나가도록 하는 대승 불교의 보편성과 1, 700여년의 전통적 한국불교문화 속에서 간화선 수행을 강조하는 특수성을 포함하고 있는 조계종의 정체성을 들어내 본다. 다음으로 그 정체성과 수행방법을 활용하여 세상의 구제에 이바지함이 조계종의 대외적 위상을 확립하는 길임과 아울러, 그러기 위한 방안으로서 정체성의 홍보와 이념 구현 등이 필요함을 제시해 본다.
Nowadays, it is obvious that we are living in a multi-religious world in the age of co-existence at a global village. It seems that many peoples are recognizing Buddhist understanding and way of life as an alternative to overcome the limitation of modern civilization which had much based on the Western thoughts and industrial technology. Since I have had many occasions to participate in various international religious conferences as a personal or representative of my Order, Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, I have asked myself what is the universality and particularity of characteristics of the Order to be recognized by Buddhist and other religious people around world. To get a clue I have checked the constitution of Jogye Order and clarified that my Order has kept both the universality and particularity of Buddhism. I mean the universality of Buddhism as attaining enlightenment of oneself and enlightening the others, as well as making perfection of oneness between enlightenment and practice, since its beginning from about 2, 500 years ago. I think the particularity of Jogye Order as having emphasis on traditional meditation practice, Seon (Ch'an, Zen), as the best way to attain enlightenment, since its introduction of to Korea twelve centuries ago. I have reviewed the meaning of its name, principle purpose, major texts, lineage, and community of Jogye Order from the constitution. From the characteristics of them, I mentioned the position of Jogye Order in the international situation. Then I suggested the ways to improve the international recognition of Jogye Order, such as improving public relations and taking parts of international movement.
