인도 사상에 있어 표현할 수 없는 것에 대한 언어표현=The controversy surrounding 'inexpressible'(avyapadeśya) in the definition of perception(pratyakṣa) between Naiyāyika and Buddhist
본고의 주요 논지는 제2장과 제3장으로 구성된다. 제2장에서는 구 니야야 학파의 지각의 정의 중에 서술되는 “표현할 수 없는 것(avyapadeśya)”이라는 용어를 둘러싼 불교와의 논쟁을 살펴본다. 제3장에서는 디그나가의 지각의 정의 중에 지각(pratyakṣa)과 분별의 배제(kalpanāpoḍha)라는 용어를 둘러싼 니야야 학파와의 논쟁을 살펴본다. 니야야 학파는 지각을 표현할 수 없는 무분별지와 표현할 수 있는 분별지라는 두 종류를 인정한다. 그러나 불교는 지각을 표현할 수 없는 무분별지만 인정한다. 니야야 학파의 견해로서는 바츠야야나와 웃됴타카라의 입장을 정리하고, 불교 측이 비판하는 논리를 검증한다. 또한 불교의 견해로서는 디가나가의 입장을 정리하고, 니야야 학파 측이 비판하는 논리를 검증하는 동시에 카마라쉬라의 재반론의 논리를 분석한다. 본고의 후반부에 해당하는 제4장에서는 필자는 전반부의 논지를 기반으로 각 학파의 표현할 수 없는 지각이 가지는 논리의 자기모순성을 실험적으로 지적한다. 우선 불교 측의 자기모순성에 관해서는 다르마키르티의 지각 정의에 등장하는 “착각이 없는 것(abhrānta)”을 디그나가가 니야야 학파의 표현할 수 없는 것이라는 한정사를 비판하는 논리의 잣대로써 검증한다. 이어서 니야야 학파 측의 자기모순성에 관해서는 표현할 수 없는 지각을 다음 세 가지 점에 주의해서 살펴본다. 첫째, 지각이란 실체, 속성, 운동에 대한 인식이라는 점. 둘째, 지각은 보편 내지 특수가 전제되어야 한다는 점, 셋째, 그 보편과 특수가 대상에 내속하는 것이 아닌 명칭으로서 보편과 특수라는 점. 결론적으로 필자는 니야야 학파의 표현할 수 없는 지각은 실체, 속성, 운동에 내속하는 보편 내지 특수를 인식하는 것은 불가능하다고 판단하고, 그것을 전제로 하는 표현할 수 없는 지각의 생기는 논리상 자기모순이라고 결론짓는다.
In the first part, the paper examines the debate between Naiyāyika and Bauddha about the term, inexpressible(avyapadeśya) described in the context of the definition of perception(pratyakṣa) in Nyāya sūtra. In the second part, the paper considers their arguments about the terms, perception, and conceptual construction(kalpanāpoḍha). Nyāya school acknowledges two kinds of perceptions, one is non-inexpressible and devoid of conceptual construction, the other is expressible and conceptual construction. Buddhist school admits, however, the formal as the only perception. The paper summarizes the perspective of Vātsyāyana and Uddyotakara on inexpressible perception as Nyāya school's positions and also examines their contentions from the view of Buddhist school. On the other hand, it is shown that not only the viewpoints of Dignāga and Dharmakīrti on the exclusion of conceptualization but also how they are criticized by Nyāya school. Besides, the counterargument of Kamalaśīla is introduced with my analysis according to Buddhist logic. Finally, the research examines the term, non-erroneous(abhrānta) in Dharmakīrti's definition on perception described in Pramāṇaviniścaya and Nyāyabindu with the angle of Dignāga that is the same as he verifies inexpressible of Nyāya school. On the other hand, I consider the inexpressible perception of Nyāya with the following three points. First, perception is the cognition of substance(dravya), properties(guṇa), action(karman). Second, perception of something has to have the preceding condition that is the cognition of universality(sāmānya) or specificity(viśeṣa) to validate perception. Third, The preceding universality or specificity is not inherent in substance, properties or action, but has already been cognized as the designation before perceiving universality or specificity inherent I conclude it is impossible to aware of universality or specificity inherent in substance, properties, or action when we have inexpressible perception because there is no way to reach universality or specificity without designation of universality or specificity.
