한용운의 『불교대전』과 난조분유·마에다 에운의 『불교성전』의 비교연구 -- 구조의 차이와 인용 경전의 특징을 중심으로=The Comparative Study of the Great Texts of Buddhism of Yongun Han and the Holy Texts of Buddhism of Bun’yu Nanjo and Eun Maeda: Focusing on the Characteristics of the Structure and Citing Buddhist Scriptures

摘要
본 연구는 한용운(韓龍雲)의 『불교대전(佛敎大典)』(1914)과 난조분유(南條文雄)와 마에다 에운(前田慧雲)의 『불교성전(佛敎聖典)』(1905)의 공통점과 차이를 비교함으로써 한용운의 불교사상의 특징을 찾아보려는 시도이다. 두 문헌 모두 근대 불교성전(Buddhist Bible)의 편찬 흐름 속에 등장한 새로운 형태의 불교경전이다. 이들은 여러 불교경전의 주요 내용을 발췌, 채록하여 구성한 초종파적, 종합적 성격의 경전으로서, 『화엄경』, 『열반경』, 『법화경』, 『무량수경』 등 다양한 경전의 내용을 망라하고 있다. 또 ‘국가’, ‘사회’, ‘박애’, ‘계급’, ‘위생’ 등 다양한 근대어들을 주요 항목으로 구성하고 있다. 이런 점에서 두 문헌은 근대 한국과 일본에서 불교경전을 새롭게 재편하고자 노력한 선구적 문헌이라는 공통점을 지닌다. 그러나 한용운의 『불교대전』은 일본의 『불교성전』의 영향을 많이 받은 것으로 평가된다. 따라서 본 논문은 두 가지 면에 초점을 맞추어 두 문헌을 비교했다. 그 하나는 내용의 배치와 구성방식이며, 다른 하나는 인용경전의 비교이다. 결론적으로 『불교대전』과 『불교성전』은 그 내용과 형식에서 많은 공통점을 지니면서도 동시에 큰 차이점을 가지고 있음을 알 수 있다. 교리적 차원에서 『불교대전』과 『불교성전』은 큰 차이를 보이지 않는다. 둘 다 ‘마음[心]’이 우주와 인간의 본체이며 인간에게 여래장과 불성이 있다고 보며, 『화엄경』과 『열반경』의 세계관을 공유하고 있다. 차이점으로는 『불교성전』이 정토진종 특유의 ‘타력신앙’과 ‘참회’, ‘신심’을 강조하며, 『무량수경』계통의 경전을 인용하는 비율이 『불교대전』에 비해 4배에 이르고 있는 점을 들 수 있다. 한용운의 『불교대전』의 독창성은 ‘신앙’의 차원에서 ‘발심’, 부처 만이 아니라 ‘보살’의 중요성, 그리고 일체 만유의 ‘평등성’과 ‘수학’, ‘수행’을 강조하고 있는 점이다. 그것은 부처와 보살과 일체중생의 평등을 강조하는 ‘평등주의적 세계관’과, ‘발심’과 ‘발원’을 통한 인간의 주체적 자각을 강조하는 한용운의 기본 사상을 반영한다. 또한 『불교대전』의 목차구성에서 ‘수신제가치국평천하’의 유가적 성격도 발견할 수 있다.
This study aims to clarify the characteristics of the structure and meaning of the Great Texts of Buddhism(佛敎大典, 1914) of Yongun Han(韓龍雲) by comparing with the Holy Texts of Buddhism(佛敎聖典, 1905) of Bun’yu Nanjo(南條文雄) and Eun Maeda(前田慧雲). These modern Buddhist Bibles have appeared in the Modern Era to make one concise and simple Buddhist canon. The Great Texts of Buddhism by Yongun Han is a product of the flow of the modern Buddhist Bibles as well as a unique accomplishment of modern Korean Buddhism. Han’s Bible is arranged and structured by the original idea of Han, but his book seems to be influenced by The Holy Texts of Buddhism. This study attempts to compare the two aspects of the texts. One is the structure of the contents, and the other is the Buddhist scriptures these texts cite. In the conclusion, the two texts have many similarities and differences as well. On the doctrinal dimension, these two texts show the almost same Buddhist world view. They see ‘the mind(心)’ is the most important reality of the universe and humankind. They think every human-being has 'Buddha nature(佛性)' and 'buddhadhatu(Tathagata garba, 如來藏)’. Their basic doctrines rely on Avatamsaka Sūtra(華嚴經) and Mahāparinirvāna Sūtra(涅槃經). On the contrary, they show big differences as well. The Holy Texts of Buddhism stresses the importance of the belief in the Other Power(他力信仰) of Amitabha Buddha and 'repentence' and 'faith'. It also cites the scriptures of the Pure Land(Sukhāvatī, 淨土) Buddhism many times much more than the Great Texts of Buddhism does. All these facts tell us that it has a strong feature of the authors' belief, that is, the faith of Jōdo Shinshū(淨土眞宗). The Great Texts of Buddhism of Han stresses the importance of resolution(spiritual awakening, 發心), self-discipline, autonomy and meditation of Buddhist practitioner. It also sets a high value on 'Bodhisattva Ideal' as much as 'Buddha Ideal', and stresses 'the equality of all beings' of the universe. Han’s book also shows us a Confucian aspect that is included in the ethical dimension of his Buddhist faith. Accordingly, Han's text shows that he made the text by following the basic structure of The Holy Texts of Buddhism, but at the same time, he transformed it by his own creative thought and purpose.
