본 논고는 백련결사의 성립과 전개에 대하여 살펴본 연구이다. 백련결사는 원묘국사 요세에 의하여 강진 백련사에서 시작되었다. 천책은 스승 요세의 지시를 받아 결사문을 작성하였으며, 백련결사는 최씨 무인정권의 외호 뿐만 아니라 그 지역의 호족층과 민이 대거 동참하였다. 그리하여 요세는 의천과 제자 계응과 지눌과 제자 혜심과 더불어 국가의 최고의 고승으로 받들어졌다. 백련사 결사는 제자 천인에 의해 주관되었으며, 나아가 천관산에 가서 천태종의 부흥을 꾀하였던 듯하다. 천관산의 아육왕탑이 그것을 대변해준다. 그 후 백련사는 상주에 동백련사 결사로 확대 전개되게 되며, 여기에 일찍이 송나라 황제에게 받은 다보서탑도를 문인 최자의 후원으로 천인과 천책이 동백련 결사에서 경찬회를 주재 봉안하며 결사를 진작시켰다. 특히 천책은 동백련사의 초대 사주가 되어 수선사 사주 원오국사 천영의 도반이자 진도 용장사 주지인 선승 법운탁연이 송의 영파 연경사에서 가져온 불설명, 조사찬, 정토원기, 법화수품찬 등 불서를 봉안하며 결사를 드높였다. 백련사는 상주 동백련사 뿐만 아니라 완도의 법화사와 제주의 법화사와 연계를 가지면서 확대되었다. 승려 혜일은 완도법화사에서 천책과 교유하며 결사를 전개하였고 나아가 제주 법화사에 진출하여 결사를 확대하였다. 그 무렵 고종대 지방 뿐만 아니라 개경 일대에서도 보암사와 연화원에서 결사가 전개되었다. 강진에서 시작된 결사가 개경으로 확대되어 무외국통 정오는 의천이 개창한 국청사에서 주불을 봉안하며 천태종의 사세를 진작시켰다. 향후 진정국사 천책의 적사인 이안의 제자 부암운묵이 근기지방 시흥 일대에서 결사정신을 전개하게 된다. 아울러 조인규 가문의 천태종 승려 삼장법사 의선의 후손인 보해나 묘혜, 요원 등도 수원 만의사 일대에서 『법화영험전』을 간행하는 등 결사정신을 선양하게 되는 것이다.
The study investigates the association and expansion of the Baekryeon Association. It started from the Baekryeonsa Temple in Gangjin by Wonmyoguksa Yose. Cheonchaek wrote the determination of the association under the order of his mentor, Yose; the association absorved the outer moats of the military juntas of Choi as well as the powerful families and people of the region. Therefore, Yose was praised as the highest monk along with Uicheon and his students, Gyeung and Jinul and his student, Hyesim. The association was organized by Cheonin and it sought the revival of the Cheontaejong in Mt. Cheongwan. The Ayukwangtap Tower in Mt. Cheongwan proves it. The Baekryeonsa Temple was expanded and spread to the Dongbaekryeonsa Association. It also raised their spirits by hosting the Gyeongchanhoi in the Dongbaekryeon association, by Cheonin and Cheonchaek from the support of Choija, who gave the Daboseotapdo from the Emperor of Song. In particular, Cheonchaek became the head Buddhist monk in the Dongbaekryeonsa Temple and he raised spirits by contributing Buddhism books to the Temple, including Bulseolmyeong, Josachan, Jeongtowongi and Beophwasupumchan, brought by Buddhist monk Beopuntakyeon, a friend of Wonoguksa Cheonyeong in the Suseonsa Temple and the head Buddhist monk of Jindo Yongsangsa Temple. The Baekryoensa Temple was expanded by having relations with Dongbaekryeon in Sangju and Baekryeonsa Temples in Wando Island and Jeju Island. Buddhist monk Hyeil expanded the association with Cheonchaek in the Wando Beophwasa Temple and even in the Jeju Beophwasa Temple. Associations were expanded not only in the Gojongdae region but also at the Boamsa Temple and Yeonhwawon, around Gaegyeong. The movement spread from Gangjin to Gaegyeong, and Muoiguktong Jeongo improved the power of Cheontaejong by contributing spells in the Gukcheongsa Temple established by Uicheon. Later, Buamunmuk, a student and the eldest disciple of Jinjeongguksa Cheonchaek, raised the spirit of the association around Siheung. Together, Bohae and Myohye, who were descendants and students of Samjangbeopsa Uiseon of Ingyu Cho's family in the Cheontaejong, raised spirits by publishing 'Beophwayeongheomjeon (Dharma-flower absorption)' at the Suwon Manuisa Temple.
