In this paper I have examined the principle of Vipassanā and its practice. In the chapter with regards to the meaning of Vipassanā, I confirm that Cattāro Satipaṭṭhānā Vipassanā is originally based on Buddha's teaching and it is also the way of practice which Buddha left to his disciples as his last instruction. Thus, I emphasized that Cattāro Satipaṭṭhānā Vipassanā is the way of practice which can be verified by all Buddhists. In the chapter with regards to the principle of Vipassanā, I examined an original meaning of Vipassanā and its functional concepts like sampajañña, sati, viditā, etc. These three concepts are essential in practice of Vipassanā. Through the three concepts we are able to understand characteristics of Vipassanā more clearly. On the other hand, in the chapter with regard to practice of Vipassanā, I introduced briefly Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna-Suttanta, connecting its content with Vipassanā which was being practiced in Myanmar, Thailand, etc. The masters of Vipassanā in southern Buddhism teach their disciples in their own ways, which are based on this sutra. The teachings by the masters of southern Buddhism are a little different from each other. Yet, what is more important is that they are not beyond Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna-Suttanta. Moreover, even four forms of Satipaṭṭhānā cannot be said to be separated from each other. As the power of Vipassanā grows, one can be keenly aware of his physical and mental phenomena. So all practices with southern masters of Vipassanā introduced in this paper can be said to be expedients for beginners of Vipassanā.
