摘要
Clear understanding of living and death leads us to reassure the value and significance of human being. Those two wordsliving and deathimply two opposite sides of a human life. They cannot be separated from each other in that death lies in life and life in death. Human being is born, raised, and grown up, who eventually aged and die. Like this, living and death is destined natural cycle of all living creatures. While loving and addicting to their own life, most people regard death as disturbing element of happy life which is irrelevant to their lives; they further have fear and taboo death. The more ignorant about living and death, the more suffer and pain they experience when faced with both living and death. In fact, death is the ending of ones life, shadow and mirror of the life; therefore, living and death cannot be thought as separate. It is living and death which is the most important matter to every single humans. For this reason, Buddhism teaches that the matter of living and death is more important than anything else by saying living and death is the most significant thing in human life. Without them, Buddha would have not left secular world and, in turn, Buddhism could not have come into life. Thus, it can be said that Buddhism is originated from consideration on living and death; because Buddha himself began his consideration on them and attained divine enlightenment with thorough settlement. Also, all of the various practices and sayings of Buddhism focus on solution for the matter of living and death. Among all of the above, especially Seon in Buddhism entails direct and clear solutions for the great topics of living and death. Actually, after practicing and attaining enlightenment by themselves, a large number of Seon masters shows us the nature of living and death in person by surpassing the limitations. In this paper, I will examine the meaning of living and death in Seon by exploring the saying living and death is the most significant thing in human life. Then, I will argue that the matter of living and death can be and should be overcame only with the true enlightenment.
