본 고찰은 근현대기 백양사의 고승인 만암의 선농일치 사상을 분석한 글이다. 만암은 일제하에서는 백양사를 중창하면서 백양사 주지를 장기간 수행하였으며, 해방공간에서는 고불총림이라는 혁신 공동체를 운영하였으며, 정화운동 당시에는 종정으로 불교정화에 직접적인 연관을 갖고 있는 고승이었다. 그리고 그는 교육불사에도 많은 업적을 갖고 있다. 그러나 지금껏 그에 대한 연구는 활성화되지 않았다. 필자는 이렇듯이 만암 연구가 부실한 상황을 고려하면서도 그의 생애, 업적, 사상의 근간으로 이해되고 있는 선농일치 사상의 개요와 성격을 조명하려고 하였다. 그래서 문헌에 나타난 만암의 자료를 총괄 정리하고, 거기에 나타난 선농일치의 내용을 정리하였다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 만암의 선농일치는 백양사 중창의 과정에서 자생적으로 나온 것이다. 둘째, 만암의 선농일치는 수행적인 성격이 강하였다. 셋째, 만암의 선농일치는 만암 개인에게 머물지 않고 백양사 공동체 대중들이 참여하는 것이었다. 넷째, 만암의 선농일치는 근현대 백양사 역사와 전통으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 만암 선농일치는 불교정화의 성격을 갖는다. 여섯째, 만암의 선농일치는 내장사를 근거로 선농을 실천한 고승인 백학명의 영향을 받았다. 추후에는 이와 같은 만암의 선농일치 사상과 만암의 여타 사상과의 관련 및 한국 선농불교 역사에서의 위상과 성격을 정리해야 할 것이다.
This consideration is a paper on analysis of Manam's Seon-Nong United Thought who is a high monk in Baekyangsa temple in modern period. Manam carried out Baekyangsa temple's abbot as reconstructing some buildings of Baekyangsa temple under the Japanese Empire and managed innovated community as GobulChongnim (general monastery) during the period of Liberation from the Japanese Empire and a high monk who was connected to buddhist purification directly as the patriarch of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism during purification movement. And he got a lot of achievement of educational business. But so far study on Manam has not been revitalized. As such I tried to illuminate outline and character of Seon-Nong(meditation -agriculture) united thought understanding as foundation of his life, achievement and thought in considering on weak situation for studying Manam. Therefore on the whole I arranged Manam's materials showed on literature and wrote about the contents of Manam's Seon-Nong United Thought. To sum up the contents as followings; Firstly Manam's Seon-Nong accordance occurred naturally in process of Baekyangsa temple's rebuilding. Secondly Manam's Seon-Nong accordance is powerful for practical character. Thirdly Manam's Seon-Nong accordance was participation for Baekyangsa community family not staying in his individuality. Forth Manam's Seon-Nong accordance appeared in Baekyangsa's history and tradition in modern time. Fifth Manam's Seon-Nong accordance has buddhist purification's character. Sixth Manam's Seon-Nong accordance received a high monk, Baekhakmyeong's influence who practised Seon-Nong as basis on Naejangsa temple. Later on, Manam's Seon-Nong accordance and connection to other thoughts and statue and character of Korean Seon-Nong Buddhist history should be arranged.
