摘要
南北宗論은 董其昌을 중심으로 하여 제창된 중국회화사에 있어서 매우 중요한 이론이다. 남북종론 이후 중국회화사 및 중국문화권에 있어서의 회화는 수 세기에 걸친 남북종론의 지대한 영향 하에 놓이게 된다. 하나의 이론체계가 자체적인 생명력을 가지고서 수 세기에 걸친 막대한 영향력을 행사하고 있다는 것은 그 속에 시대적 요청이 잘 반영되어 있다고 밖에는 볼 수가 없다. 그러므로 본 고찰은 남북종론에 내재한 중국문화적인 내원을 규명함으로서 이에 대한 타당성 있는 해법도출을 시도해 보고자 하였다. 이러한 문제접근에 입각하여 먼저 본 고찰에서는 남북종론의 내원에 관한 중국문화적 배경에 관해 모색해 보고자 하였다. 그리고 그 다음으로 남북종론과 밀접한 상관관계를 확보하고 있는 儒·道의 측면에 관해 고찰한 이후, 마지막 끝으로 남북종론의 형성에 있어서 가장 지대한 영향을 미치고 있는 선종의 南北分宗論과의 관련성에 대한 타당성 있는 모색을 시도해 보고자 하였다. 이와 같은 고찰을 통해서 남북종론이 단순히 한 시대를 대변하는 것이라기보다는 중국문화의 거대한 흐름에 있어서 시대적 요청을 반영한 측면이 있다는 것을 보다 분명히 하고, 또한 선종과의 관계도 단순히 모방을 통한 주장이 아닌 중국문화적인 종합적 관점에서의 주체적인 수용이었다는 것을 밝혀 보고하고자 하였다. 왜냐하면 이러한 연구의 진전이야말로 중국회화사 및 중국문화권의 회화사 고찰에 있어서 충분한 필연성을 담지한다고 할 수가 있는 부분이기 때문이다.
The South/North Principal Theory advocated by Dong Gi Chang(董其昌) is a very important theory in the history of Chinese painting. Since the presentation of South/North Principal Theory, the Chinese painting history and the paintings in Chinese cultural areas came to be under the predominant influence of South/North Principal Theory for several hundred years. If a theoretic system had maintained its own vitality and exerted a huge influence for several centuries, it should be admitted that it had well reflected the needs of time in it. So, this paper tried to clarify the Chinese cultural origin in the South/North Principal Theory and in turn to extract a plausible solution on it. On the basis of this approach, this paper tried to search the Chinese cultural background for the origin of South/North principal theory. Then, were investigated the aspects of Confucianism and Taoism that are closely related with the establishment of South/North principal theory, and finally a reasonable interpolation on the relationship between the South/North principal theory and the Zen Buddhism which exerted the greatest impact on the formation of South/North principal theory. Through this consideration, it tries to clarify that the South/North principal theory was not just an accidental product of one era but an inevitable reflection of demand of the time in the huge stream of Chinese culture, and that, in the relationship with Zen Buddhism, it was not just an imitation of Zen but an active assimilation in the synthetic perspective of Chinese culture. This study is meaningful, for the progress in this study will contribute a lot to the development of study on the painting history of China and Chinese cultural areas.
