摘要
본 고찰의 초점은 조계종 14교구 본사인 범어사의 사격의 저변에 자리잡고 있는 선찰대본산의 성립 과정, 성격을 정리하는 데에 있다. 범어사는 부산 지역의 불교를 대표하는 사찰이지만 근대기에 접어들면서 범어사의 사격, 정체성, 위상을 대변하는 선찰대본산이라는 개념이 자리잡게 되었다. 1899년부터 10여 년간, 범어사 및 산내 사암에서 禪會, 禪社가 다수 개최되었다. 여기에는 범어사 및 각처에서 온 수좌들이 수행을 하면서 범어사가 자연스럽게 선풍의 중심 사찰이 되었다. 그 중심에는 근대선의 비조로 일컫는 경허의 활약과 근대기 범어사를 대변하는 오성월의 후원이 작용하였다. 범어사는 이러한 활동으로 인하여 1911～1913년에는 전국 각처에 공문을 보내 禪宗首刹이라고 표방을 하였으며, 사찰령 체제의 사법에도 선찰대본산이라는 명칭을 구체화시켰다. 그리하여 1920년대에 가서는 범어사 구성원들도 범어사가 선찰대본산이라는 인식을 확고히 하였다. 범어사의 이러한 인식, 자부심은 일제시대 전 기간을 걸치면서 대외적으로도 표출되었다. 1910년대 초반 항일불교, 종지 수호운동이었던 임제종운동이 전개될때에 범어사 승려들도 그 중심부에 자리잡은 것은 그 예증이다. 임제종운동의 시작은 전라도 지역이었지만 운동이 본격화되면서 범어사로 본부가 이전되고, 중앙 차원의 운동의 상징인 중앙포교당이 설립될 때에 범어사 승려들도 일정한 역할을 하였다. 1920년대 전반기 선학원의 창설, 선우공제회의 활동에 있어서도 범어사 승려들의 적극적인 개입에도 바로 이 같은 선찰대본산의 사격이 작용하였다. 1920년대 중반 선학원이 운영의 부진으로 퇴진하였을 시에는 범어사 포교당으로 기능하였다. 선학원이 1930년대 초반의 재건, 1930년대 중후반에 선리참구원으로의 전환, 선종의 창립, 종무원 등장이라는 일련의 구도에서도 범어사 승려들의 적극 개입이 있었다. 특히 범어사를 선찰대본산으로 구현시킨 오성월은 선학원 재건, 활성화의 주역이었다. 즉 그는 많은 후원금을 제공, 종무원장 및 이사장으로 활동하였다. 이렇게 범어사는 근대, 일제하의 불교에서 선찰대본산이라는 사격을 공고히하면서, 그 위상 및 자부심을 갖고 임제종운동, 선학원, 선우공제회, 선리참구원, 선종 창립 등에서 주역의 역할을 하였다. 때문에 범어사 사격에는 선찰대본산의 개념이 확고하게 자리잡았다.
This paper focuse on Beomeosa temple phase of the construct and character in the history modern. Beomeosa temple has representative Pusan buddhism and the headquarters temple of the seon buddhism. Thereupon this paper summarize on the Beomeosa temple phase of the construct and character in the history modern. First, Beomeosa temple hold a large numbers seon metting 19th(1899~1911). In this situtation, suza on the whole country buddhism coming Beomeosa temple. the result, Beomeosa temple turnover representative seon buddhism. And, Beomeosa temple opening to the public of the first temple seon buddhism. After, constructing on the Japenese law of the temple that the headquarters temple of the seon buddhism. This point, Beomeosa temple and Beomeosa temple of monk take part in Seonhakwon hard core role of the difficult situation. Eventuly, Beomeosa temple phase constructed the headquarters temple of the seon buddhism in the modern period.
