| 摘要 | 빨리율(Vinayapiṭaka)에는 비구 혹은 비구니를 위해 다양한 잡일을 대신 했다고 보이는 대략 다음 5종의 명칭이 전해진다. 즉 사마네라(sāmaṇera, 沙彌), 우빠사까(upāsaka, 優婆塞), 아라미까(ārāmika, 園民), 웻야왓짜까라(veyyāvaccakara, 執事人), 깝삐야까라까(kappiyakāraka, 淨人)이다. 이들은 비구(니)를 대신해서 청소 등의 노동을 하기도 하고, 혹은 비구가 범계하지 않도록 보조하는 역할을 하기도 한다. 이 중 사마네라와 우빠사까는 비교적 그 정체가 명확하다. 이들은 사중(四衆) 혹은 칠중(七衆)의 하나로 거론되는, 이른바 불교교단의 기본 구성원이기 때문이다. 사마네라는 구족계를 받고 비구가 되기 전의 남성예비수행승이며, 우빠사까는 남성재가신도이다. 한편, 아라미까와 웻야왓짜까라, 그리고 깝삐야까라까의 경우에는 교단 내에서의 지위와 역할 등에 있어 불분명한 점이 많다. 이들은 승단에 예속된 노비와 같은 신분은 아니었던 것으로 보이며, 승단의 관리자로서 비구와 매우 긴밀한 관계를 갖고 다양한 일을 처리하고 있다.
본고는 빨리율에 나타나는 이 3종의 관리자에 관한 용례를 검토하며 각각의 특징을 밝혀보고자 한다. 본고의 검토 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 이들의 주요 업무는 비구를 위한 정법(淨法) 실행, 다시 말해 학처에서 금지된 행동을 적법하게 만들어주는 것이었다는 점에서 공통된다. 이른바 정인(淨人)으로서의 역할이다. 하지만 아라미까는 특히 주처 관리와 관련이 깊다. 이들은 비구들의 주요 와좌처였던 아라마(ārāma)의 청소나 수리, 건축 등을 위해 승단 최초로 수용된 노동 인력이었는데, 점차 승가나 비구에게 보시된 돈을 관리 내지 처리하는 정인 역할도 담당하게 된 것으로 보인다. 이에 비해 정인이라 한역되며 일반적으로 정인의 대표격으로 알려져 있는 깝삐야까라까의 경우에는 특히 식생활이라는 특정 분야와 깊은 관련을 지녔던 것으로 보인다. 한편, 웻야왓짜까라의 경우에는 용례도 상당히 적을 뿐 아니라, 내용도 명확하지 않은 면이 있어 상세한 것은 알 수 없으나, 아라미까나 깝삐야까라까처럼 특정 분야를 담당하는 인력이었다기보다는, 아라미까나 우빠사까 등을 포함하여 승단의 잡무를 보는 다양한 인력을 총칭하는 용어였을 것으로 추정된다.
In Vinayapiṭaka, roughly the following five titles that seem to have done diverse chores on behalf of bhikkhu or bhikkhunī; that is, sāmaṇera, upāsaka, ārāmika, veyyāvaccakara, and kappiyakāraka. They do work such as cleaning on behalf of bhikkhus or bhikkhunīs, or play the role of assisting bhikkhus not to violate religious precepts. Among them, the identities of sāmaṇera and upāsaka are relatively clear because these are so called basic members of the Buddhist order referred to as one of four groups(四衆) or seven groups(七衆). A sāmaṇera is a male preliminary disciplinant bonze before receiving upasampadā(具足戒) and becoming a bhikkhu and an upāsaka is a male laity. On the other hand, the statuses and roles of ārāmika, veyyāvaccakara, and kappiyakāraka in the Buddhist order are unclear in many aspects. They do not seem to be at the same status as slaves subordinate to the Saṃgha. As managers of the Saṃgha, they are quite closely related to monastic managers and handling diverse affairs.
This study is intended to review the examples of these three types of managers appearing in Vinayapiṭaka and figure out the characteristics of each of them. The results of review in this study are summarized as follows. Their major work is commonly the execution of kappiya(淨法) for bhikkhus, in other words, making behaviors prohibited in study places lawful. However, ārāmika is particularly related to residence management. They were the first labor manpower accepted for the first time by the Saṃgha for cleaning, repairs, or construction of ārāma that was major lodging of bhikkhus and they seem to gradually become to play the role of managing or handling the alms given to the Saṃgha or bhikkhus. Meanwhile, kappiyakārakas seem to have been closely related to the certain area, dietary life. Their roles seem to have become more special as the acts of storing food or materials or the acts of cooking food in the Saṃgha were gradually permitted. As for veyyāvaccakara, although details cannot be known as not only the number of examples is quite small but also the contents are not accurate, rather than being manpower in charge of certain areas such as ārāmika or kappiyakāraka, it is assumed to be a term referring to diverse workers in charge of chores in the Saṃgha including ārāmika and upāsaka. |
