Nietzsche defined Buddhism as the religion of decadence in The Antichrist and used it as a tool to criticize Christianity. In the book, he defined Buddhism as positivism, phenomenology, hygiene law, beyond good and evil, pessimism, and nihilism. From the perspective of overall Buddhist studies, Nietzsche’s assessment of Buddhism is not entirely correct, yet we cannot say that it is a totally wrong assessment. Nietzsche’s judgment, albeit limited, makes sense if we judge Buddhism only by the theory of early Buddhism. Buddhism is certainly related to positivism and phenomenal theory because it focuses on painful real-life issues, not exploring the back of the world . Buddhism is also a hygiene law because it strives to create a healthy body and an appropriate environment for the sake of mental and physical balance. Buddhism is beyond good and evil because it neither judges humans based on good and evil nor makes them blame themselves by mentioning conscience. Buddhism is pessimism, in that it views human life as pain and ensures, through nirvana, that humans never return to this world. Buddhism is also nihilism because it claims that not all beings in the world are eternal and that they never have any substance. Nietzsche never studied Buddhism in a systematic way; therefore, he had a limited understanding of it. Because Nietzsche described Buddhism based on his own special intentions in his book, The Antichrist, his evaluation of Buddhism is very original. The uniqueness that Nietzsche brought to Buddhism provided a perspective that led to a broader understanding of Buddhism.
