摘要
1995년, 개혁종단의 태공 송월주 총무원장은 깨달음의 사회화 운동을 선언한다. 깨달음의 사회화 운동은 불교사회운동의 패러다임을 구사회운동에서 신사회운동으로 전환시키는 역할을 한다. 깨달음의 사회화 운동으로 인하여 불교사회운동이 계급과 이데올로기가 충돌했던 구사회운동에서 시민들이 중심이 되어 정치, 경제, 사회적 문제에 대한 활동을 하는 신사회운동으로 바뀌게 된 것이다. 깨달음의 사회화운동 이전의 불교사회운동은 우리사회의 다른 사회운동과 마찬가지로 민중운동과 민주화운동이 주류를 이루고 있었다. 그러나 문민정부의 출범과 더불어 민주화운동의 지향점은 사라지고 ‘민중’이라는 개념 대신 ‘시민’이라는 의식이 대두되었다. 이러한 사회운동의 변화는 한국불교에도 반영되는데 그 전환점에 깨달음의 사회화 운동이 자리하고 있다. 문민정부의 탄생으로 인해 사회운동이 퇴조하고 민중불교운동도 서서히 약화되었다. 이에 불교사회운동의 주체 세력들은 개혁불사로 불리는 불교종단 내적 문제 해결에 집중했다. 그리고 개혁종단의 총무원장인 태공월주 대종사가 깨달음의 사회화 운동을 선언함으로써 불교사회운동은 신사회운동으로 패러다임을 전환하게 되었던 것이다. 태공월주 대종사는 깨달음의 사회화 운동이 특정 계급 및 계층의 이익이나 입장을 옹호하는 자기정화운동이나 이데올로기운동이 아닌 시민사회운동임을 선언하고 있다. 자기정화운동은 비구승이 대처승을 대상으로 한 불교정화운동을, 이데올로기운동은 계층 간 대립적 성격을 가졌던 민중불교운동을 지칭한다. 깨달음의 사회화 운동이 구불교사회운동인 불교정화운동․민중불교운동과는 다른 신불교사회운동인 불교시민사회운동임을 명백히 하고 있는 것이다. 깨달음의 사회화 운동이 신불교사회운동임은 깨달음의 사회화 운동 이후 불교사회운동의 변화에서 확인할 수 있다. 태공월주 대종사가 직접 행한 깨달음의 사회화 운동은 사회복지 분야의 조계종 사회복지재단, 인권 분야의 불교인권위원회와 나눔의 집, 남북교류 분야의 조불련과의 교류, 국제개발협력 분야의 지구촌공생회를 들 수 있다. 이 사회운동들은 분명 탈계급적․탈이념적인 신불교사회운동이다. 이후 깨달음의 사회화 운동은 불교사회복지, 인권, 남북교류, 국제개발협력 등의 제반 영역에서 신사회운동으로서 불교시민사회운동을 활성화하는 촉매가 되었다.
In 1995, Taegong Wolju (太空 月珠, 1935-2021), executive director of the Reform Order, declared a socialization movement of enlightenment. It played a role in changing the paradigm of the Buddhist social movement from the old social movement to the new social movement. Due to the socialization movement of enlightenment, the Buddhist social movement changed from an old Buddhist social movement centered on confrontation between classes and between ideologies to a new social movement where citizens were the center to work on political, economic, and social issues. Taegong Wolju declares that the socialization movement of enlightenment is a civil society movement, not a self-purification movement or ideological movement that defends the interests or positions of certain classes. The self-purification movement refers to the Buddhist purification movement, and the ideological movement refers to the Minjung (民衆) Buddhist movement. He clearly declared that the socialization movement of enlightenment was a new Buddhist social movement(Buddhist civil society movement) that was different from the old(Buddhist purification movement, Minjung Buddhist movement). The socialization movement of enlightenment can be confirmed as a new Buddhist social movement from the changes that followed this movement. The socialization movement of enlightenment implemented by Taegong Wolju himself includes the Korean Buddhist Foundation for Social Welfare, the Buddhist Human Rights Committee and the House of Sharing, the exchange with the Joseon (朝鮮) Buddhist Federation, and the Global Community Association. These social movements are clearly post-class and post-ideological the new Buddhist social movements. Since then, the socialization movement of enlightenment has become a catalyst to revitalize the Buddhist civil society movement as a new social movement in various areas such as Buddhist social welfare, human rights, inter-Korean exchanges, and international development cooperation.
