The Buddhist Missionary University was founded with funding from the religious orders of Buddhism with the purpose of offering education based on Buddhist ideas. This study suggests directions for the improvement of Buddhism-based character education curricula at the Buddhist Missionary University. To this end, the author investigated current curricula at Dongguk University (Jogye Order), Uiduk University (Jin-gak Order), Geumgang University (Cheontae Order), and Wonkwang University (Won-Buddhism) and identified the following problems in the curricula: an excessive emphasis on job training and weakened general education with regard to social aspects ; repulsion and disinterest on the part of students; and a low proportion of full-time instructors with general education backgrounds. Based on the aforementioned problems, this study suggests the following four directions to improve Buddhism-based character education at the Buddhist Missionary University. The first task is to reinforce general education based on the principle of free learning. Given the current focus on job training, general education based on free learning, a core principle of university education, must be emphasized to enhance whole-person education so that students are equipped with truth, goodness, and beauty, as well as knowledge, justice, and righteousness. The second direction involves the popularization of Buddhism-based character education. Classes related to Buddhism-based character education should not be designed to propagate religious ideas but must instead be designed to encourage two-way discussions between students and instructors about issues students care most about, such as their lives and careers, without being religiously intimidating. The third task is to standardize Buddhism-based character education. Standard textbooks for Buddhism-based character education should be designated for each subject so that education and evaluation are carried out in a uniform fashion. The fourth initiative should be to vitalize extracurricular activities. As the ability of regular curricula to fulfill the goals of character education is limited, extracurricular activities should be developed based on Buddhist doctrines, ideas, and cultures. To this end, this study suggests the implementation of detailed programs such as a faith practice retreat for faculty members and students, as well as experiences such as temple stays, meditation, and mindfulness training. To encourage participation in these programs, this study proposes an “extracurricular mileage program” that incentivizes students to engage in extracurricular activities through “mileage points.”
