근대 불교잡지는 근대전환기에 불교 교단을 형성하는 데 큰 기여를 한 혁신적 매체이다. 그러나 잡지의 ‘雜’적인 성격, 즉 잡지가 복합문화적 담론을 담은 공론의 장이라는 점에 주목하면 교단사 연구를 넘어 잡지 자체에 대한 연구가 필요하다는 점은 분명하다. 본고는 현전 최초의 불교잡지인 『조선불교월보』(총19호, 1912.2~1913.8)의 간행과 전개과정을 살펴보고, 편집 겸 발행인 및 주요 필진, 그리고 독자 및 투고자 그룹을 조사하여 내적 전개과정을 살펴보았다. 그리고 이들이 문학의 창작자로 재등장하여 전개한 다양한 문학적 시도를 살펴보고 그 가치를 평가하였다. 『조선불교월보』의 운영 기관은 내외의 정세 변화에 따라 1호에서 4호까지는 ‘원종종무원’, 5호부터 종간호까지는 ‘조선선교양종각본산주지회의원’으로 명칭이 바뀌었다. 편집 겸 발행인은 1~7호까지는 권상로, 8호~종간호까지는 박한영이다. 이는 권상로가 시종 편집인으로 등장하는 판권란의 정보와 다른 양상이다. 8호 박한영의 등장과 함께 선암사 출신 최동식이 영입되면서 지면의 변화도 수반되었다. 『조선불교월보』의 발간의 주체가 전근대와 근대에 걸친 중간 세대적 성격을 가지고 있는 것처럼, 여기에 담긴 문학 역시 전근대적 양식과 근대적 양식이 혼종 되어 있다. 다양한 문학양식을 통해 근대불교의 정립과 대중화를 모색한 점은 매우 의미 있는 것이지만, 문학적으로 장르 자체의 본령에 이르지 못한 한계가 분명하다. 결국 조선불교월보는 20세기 초의 문화변동을 읽는 텍스트이면서, 19세기 중후반의 문화를 반영하고 이를 정리하는 공론의 장으로 기능하고 있다는 점에서 독특한 가치를 지닌다.
The history of Buddhist magazine in Korea has been more over 100 years, and the study of literature in modern Buddhist magazine has been 10 years. Of course there were remained many ambiguous matters like as editor's name and his term of office and the role in magazine, or the relationship of collaboration etc. is the first magazine appeared at 1912 year in as a new media in Korea. It has known that the editor of this magazine was Kwon Sang-ro a scholar monks. But it is not a fact. In this paper I tried to enlighten the real editor of who had changed not any explain or formula notice. This is not simple matter, because editor has decision right of a tone of argument of magazine. In conclusion it is new fact that Kwon Sang-ro was changed to Park Han-yeong at volume 8th of this magazine. Park was a famous lecturer and scholar monk at that times has had various concern at literature, Buddhism history, traditional Buddhism philosophy. At the time presented as a editor, Park came together with Choi Dong-sik who was a monk from Sunamsa at Jeonnam province. By his knowledge and interest matter there had been appeared various cultural and historical articles concern with Sunamsa. And there are many literature text by using various traditional of new modern style of Korean literature. But In spite of new trials by editor or his companions I don't think that they gained good achievement in this magazine. These were complexities of Buddhist magazine in those days.
