고려불화(高麗佛畫)의 유사성과 의미 -- 지장보살도(地藏菩薩圖)를 중심으로=Similarities and Significance of Buddhist Paintings Produced during the Goryeo Period: Focusing on the Cases of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Paintings
고려불화는 형상, 필선, 채색, 그리고 문양의 치밀한 조합의 결정체로 한국 미술의 우수성을 보여주는 대표적인 사례 중 하나이다. 그 동안 많은 전시와 연구는 고려불화의 실체를 구체화시켜 주었고 우수성도 대체로 입증되었다. 본 논문은 고려불화의 다양한 주제 중 지장보살도에 집중하여 그 양상을 좀 더 구체적으로 살펴보고자 시도했으며 특히 작품들 간의 유사성에 주목했다. 고려시대 지장보살도는 현재 14세기에 제작된 20여 점이 남아 있다. 지장독존도, 지장삼존도, 지장천신도, 지장시왕도, 아미타 · 지장병립도, 관음 · 지장병립도 등 다양한 형식의 작품이 공존한다. 반면에 도상과 화풍에서는 유사성이 두드러진다. 고려 지장보살도는, 각 작품의 개성이 일부 확인되기도 하지만, 대체로 표현과 기법을 공유하고 있다. 이는 14세기 지장보살도의 특성을 파악할 수 있는 근거가 되며 국적을 명확히 규정할 수 있는 단서가 되기도 한다. 도상적으로도 유사성이 많이 보이는데, 이는 주존인 지장보살의 형상은 물론 권속의 도상과 배치 등에서도 확인할 수 있다. 또한 동일 도상의 작품을 비교해 봤을 때, 밑그림을 공유한 경우와 작품으로서의 그림을 모본으로 하여 제작한 경우로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 고려시대 지장보살도의 도상과 표현기법 상의 유사성은 여러 가지 요인에 의한 것이겠지만, 무엇보다도 주요 발원계층인 권문세족의 동질성, 제작 장인들의 인접성, 그리고 당시 불화의 수요 증가로 인한 효율성과 신속성 등이 복합적으로 작용한 결과라고 판단된다.
Buddhist paintings dating from the Goryeo period (918-1392) exhibit a close-knit combination of forms, brush strokes, colors, and patterns, and as such constitute leading examples of the excellence of Korean fine artworks. Indeed, the many exhibitions held and the abundant research conducted to date have gone a long way toward substantiating them and proving their excellence. Among the array of subjects used in Buddhist paintings of the Goryeo period, this paper attempts to examine the paintings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva with the principal focus on their similarities. There are more than twenty extant paintings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva dating from the Goryeo period, most of which were made during the fourteenth century. The paintings feature diverse compositions including paintings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva alone; the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva triad; the triad with Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the heavenly deities; the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Kings of Hell; Amitabha Buddha and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva standing together; and Avalokitesvara and Ksitigarbha bodhisattvas standing together. Despite this broad variety of compositions, however, they display similarities in terms of their iconography and painting style. In general, Goryeo paintings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva appear to share similar skills of expression, although some of them display a degree of uniqueness that distinguishes from the others. This fact provides the basis for assessing the features of the paintings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva of the 14th century and for defining their nationality clearly. They also display similarities in their iconography - most conspicuously in the depictions of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva himself. Similarities are also found in the images of the attendants and their layout. As for the works containing similar images, some appear to have shared the same basic design while others were made using the same original. This similarity of the images and techniques displayed in Goryeo paintings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is attributable to diverse factors, and is thought to be a result of the homogeneity between the main prayers, Gwonmunsejok and the purpose of their production, the conservative attitude of the painters, who followed in the footsteps of their predecessors, and the complex interaction between the need for efficiency and rapidity in the face of increasing demand for Buddhist paintings.
