본 논문의 핵심은 『看話決疑論』의 총 다섯 가지 문답을 통해 普照知訥(1158-1210)의 看話禪에 관한 견해를 정밀히 분석하는 데 있다. 연구의 중심인 『간화결의론』은 보조지눌의 사후 『圓頓成佛論』과 함께 발견되었으며, 서책의 저작연대는 1198년 이후로 추정한다. 그의 제자 眞覺慧諶(1178-1234) 등에 의해 지눌의 사후인 貞祐 3년, 1215년에 판각되었다. 서책의 내용은 『華嚴經』에 이미 法界의 無碍緣起를 밝혀 취하고 버릴 것이 없는데, 무슨 이유로 선문에서는 열 가지 병을 가려 화두를 보는지(看話)에 대한 질문으로 시작하여 모두 다섯 가지의 문답을 통해 지눌이 밝히고자하는 간화선이 피력되어있다. 지눌은 大慧宗杲(1089-1163)의 간화선이론을 전체적으로 수용하고 있어, 그가 논하는 간화선의 큰 줄기는 『대혜어록』과 크게 다르지 않다. 그럼에도 불구하고 만약 그만이 피력하고 있는 독자적인 내용이 있다면 무엇일까? 이것을 밝혀내는 것이 본 논문의 핵심내용이라 할 것이다. 이 논문에서 논자는 『간화결의론』에 나타나있는 그의 간화선의 특성을 네 가지정도로 요약해보았다. 이 책이 지닌 무엇보다 중요한 핵심은 화엄교학과의 비교를 통해 간화선이 지닌 우월성을 드러낸 데 있다. 지눌은 간화경절문의 화두참구, 즉 活句의 참구야말로 일체의 사량과 분별 및 情識과 교학을 통한 불법의 지견마저도 붙을 여지가 없는 장점을 지니고 있음을 확연히 드러내고 있다. 그는 이 서책에서 간화선의 화두참구는 일체의 교리적 이론이나 분별적 사유를 초월하여 있기 때문에 말길이 끊어지고 마음의 작용이 사라진 마음의 본바탕을 꿰뚫어 들어가는 방편이라 파악하고, 화엄원교가 비록 교학 중에서 뜻과 이치가 가장 원만하고 미묘한 길이긴 하지만, 모두가 알음알이와 뜻으로 들어서 알고 생각으로 헤아리는 과정을 거치기 때문에 선문의 화두를 참구해 바로 끊어 깨달아드는 문(경절문)과는 확연히 다르다는 것이다. 이 논서 『간화결의론』은 여러 가지 해석을 할 수 있을 것이다. 즉, 글자가 표명하는 것처럼 ‘간화선의 의심을 결단하는 논서’ 또는 ‘간화선으로 의심을 결단하는 논서’라고 할 수도 있을 것이다.
This paper presents an elaborate analysis of Bojo Jinul’s perspective on Ganhwa Seon based on the five questions and answers recorded in the Ganhwa Gyeoruiron (看話決疑論; Resolving Doubts about Observing the Hwadu). The Ganhwa Gyeoruiron, which is the focus of this study, was discovered after the death of Jinul, along with Wondon Songbullon (圓頓成佛論), and is thought to have been authored sometime after 1198. It was inscribed on printing woodblocks in 1215 by Jinul’s disciple, Jingak Hyesim(眞覺慧諶; 1178-1234). In this book, Jinul begins by asking why the Seon School investigates the Hwadu by discriminating between ten kinds of illnesses, even though the Flower Ornament Sutra (華嚴 經) had already illuminated the unhindered dependent origin of the Dharma realm, and thus revealed that there is nothing to select or reject. He then sets forth his view on Ganhwa Seon by proposing five questions and answers. Jinul’s perspective and the broader framework of Seon, as reflected in Ganhwa Gyeoruiron, is based on the Ganhwa Seon of Dahui Zonggao, as Jinul himself clarified. However, what if there is something about himself that he is telling us? Revealing this is the core of this paper. The essay summarizes the characteristics of his simplified lines in Ganhwa Gyeoruiron in four ways. The most important thing in the book is that it shows the superiority of the Ganhwa Seon by comparison with the Hwaham Academia. It is evident that investigating the Hwadu in shortcut gate (investigating a living phrase) has the advantage that there is no room to attach all charges, discretion, and knowledge of illegality, although Hwaham Wongyo(華嚴圓敎) is the most peaceful and subtle way of teaching, it is different from the conversation of a preface as everyone goes through the process of understanding and thinking. Ganhwa Gyeoruiron may be viewed from various perspectives. I would say it is also ‘a book which resolves the suspicion of the Ganhwa Seon’, Or ‘an essay that resolves suspicion by Ganhwa Seon’.
