Along with Tongdosa and Odaesan(Mt. Odae) Jungdae, Jungamsa is one of the representative temples enshrining Buddha’s ashes. However, Il-yeon and Min Ji’s descriptions of Jajang, commonly referred to as the primary records of Jungamsa, do not mention anything about this fact. In this light, the Jungamsa Records written by Seongwoo in 1778 serve as an important historical source of the characteristics and issuesof the temple. This study reviewed the “Story of the Dragon King of the West Sea” and the parts on “Sumano-Stupa” that appear only in the 『Jungamsa Records』. The study discussed the rationale behind the records of these claims. With the Story of the Dragon King of the West Sea, this study clarified that a particularity of Jungamsa converted the dragon in Taehwaji(太和池) in Mt. Wutai, China. This study proved that the temple attempted this conversion to establish the sacredness of Sumano-Stupa as the center of religious faith in association with the Dragon King of the West Sea. In other words, the dragon in Taehwaji was converted into the Dragon King of the West Sea in the process of reinforcing the status of Sumano-Stupa. Next, in regard to Sumano-Stupa, this study established that the location of Sumano-Stupa was Galbanji(葛蟠地), a site Jajang discovered in Mt. Taebak to witness Mañjuśrī. This study also associated the location of Jungamsa under Galbanji with the old names of the temple: Seoknamwon(石南院) and (Lower[下]) Salla(薩那). As a result, the locations of, and interrelationships among Galbanji, Sumano-Stupa, and Jungamsa, are clearer. Through the research approaches mentioned above, the findings of this study were significant in establishing a clearer position of Jungamsa, a historical temple with limited records.
