Western philosophy was accepted and utilized in various manners in early modern China. One Western philosopher who played an extremely important role was Schopenhauer and the representative figure who utilized Schopenhauer’s philosophy in the context of Buddhism was Zhang Taiyan. The way in which Zhang Taiyan understood Schopenhauer’s philosophy is as follows: Blind will (Wille) is what causes suffering in human life, and compassion (Miltleid) is the method by which human beings overcome such will, which, in turn, annihilates that will so that it ultimately enters the world of non-being. Based on his knowledge of Buddhism, Zhang interprets this logical structure as being analogous to the emergence of human suffering due to ignorance and the subsequent attainment of nirvana by way of overcoming the ignorance in Buddhism. When he interpreted Schopenhauer’s notion of will as ignorance, he not only drew from the notion of ignorance in the early Buddhism, but also from the idea of Avidyā in the Mahayana Buddhism that appears in texts such as the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana. Unlike Schopenhauer, however, he presents the personified form that appears as a result of overcoming ignorance, and that is the bodhisattva-icchantika. This personified form is the agent of compassion and non-being that Zhang discusses in his philosophy.
