This study examines whether it is feasible to compare the Buddha’s teachings, as explained in the Pāli-Nikāya and the counseling techniques used by Western psychologists. Interest in Asian psychology, which is very different from Western psychology, is attracting an increasing amount of attention in the international psychological community, and in Korea efforts to revitalize Buddhist counseling are on the rise. However, there is a general lack of theories about Buddhist counseling that are agreed upon by scholars, and the development of counseling techniques is sorely needed for therapists to conduct Buddhist counseling effectively. Most counseling sessions in Korea are based on Western counseling techniques. Based on cases in the Pāli-Nikāya, this study is an examination of how the Buddha’s teachings compare with Western counseling techniques, and an attempt to define the clear characteristics of Early Buddhist counseling. In looking up cases where the Buddha counseled others, the scope of this study is limited to the Mūlapaṇṇāsapāḷi (The Root Fifty Discourses) in the Majjhima Nikāya, one of the five nikāyas. The authors have tried to maintain objectivity by asking three counseling specialists to rate this study and the application of the counseling techniques to the Buddha’s teachings. As a result, the cases of the Buddha’s counseling that appear in the Root Fifty Discourses were found to actively employ directive rather than non-directive approaches. In terms of specific techniques, education, metaphors, self-disclosure, and information-giving were prominent. Unlike most Western counselors, who see themselves as friends or companions of their clients, the Buddha was an object of dependency or someone to rely on, according to the Pāli-Nikāya. The authors discovered that the directive approach was preferred to the non-directive approach in Early Buddhism, which differs from the Western trend that prefers the non-directive approach. More studies like this should provide momentum to establish Buddhist counseling techniques within the Asian cultural sphere, based on the Buddha’s teachings.
