| 摘要 | 본 고찰은 조계종단 율원의 역사와 성격을 역사적인 관점에서 살핀 연구이다. 율원은 계율 특히 律藏을 배우고 연구하는 교육 기관이다.
계율은 불교 수행의 근간인 계 · 정 · 혜 三學의 수행에 있어서도 중요하게 인정된다. 때문에 계율에 대한 습득, 이해, 연구를 기하는 율원은 조계종단의 차원에서 결코 간과할 수 없는 대상이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금껏 율원과 관련된 제반 내용(역사, 제도, 변천, 율사, 교육과정)에 대한 연구는 심화되지 않았다.
본 고찰은 위와 같은 배경에서 서술되었다. 필자는 이 글에서 율원의 전체적인 개요를 정리하려고 한다. 요컨대 근현대 불교사에서의 율원을 6하원칙의 관점에서 개괄적 정리를 시도했다. 이런 이해를 통해 추후에는 율원에 대한 진일보한 연구가 가능할 것이다. 그러면서 백용성의 전법제자이면서 율사인 자운이 표방한 천화율원의 대두 배경도 찾고자 한다.
이런 관점에서 필자는 첫째, 일제하의 模範叢林 검토를 통한 율원의 모색(청담과 성철), 둘째, 해방공간의 봉암사와 통도사에서 단행된 자운의 천화율원 표방, 셋째, 1962년 통합종단 출범이라는 새로운 체제하에서 총림 사찰(해인사, 송광사)이 등장하면서 나온 율원의 성립, 넷째, 1994년 종단개혁 체제하에서의 율원의 변화, 다섯째, 율원의 과제와 지향 등으로 대별하여 살펴보고자 한다.
이 고찰이 조계종단 율원의 역사, 개별 율원의 이해, 율사 연구, 율원에서 수학하는 승려들의 지성 등을 연구함에 있어서 일조가 되기를 기대한다.
This dissertation explores the history and culture of Vinaya seminary in the Jogye monastic order from a historical point of view. Vinaya seminary is an educational organization that learns and studies Sila and Vinaya, especially Vinaya Pitaka. Sila and Vinaya are considered significant in the practice of the precepts, meditation, and wisdom—the three supreme principles, which are the basis of Buddhist practice. Therefore, the Vinaya seminary, which focuses on learning, understanding, and studying Sila and Vinaya, cannot be ignored when we explore the position of the Jogye monastic order.
Nevertheless, to date, there has been little research relating to Vinaya seminary as a whole (including its history, system, transition, and educational courses). This dissertation is written in an attempt to fill this gap, and explore the overall background of Vinaya seminary.
I have attempted to introduce Vinaya seminary in modern Buddhist history in terms of when, where, what, why, and how.
In this view, I attempt to review, first, the background to the foundation of Vinaya seminary, by examining the exemplary comprehensive monastic compound under the Japanese Empire(Cheongdam and Seongcheol), second, establishment of the land for the Vinaya seminary by Jaun, which was proclaimed in Bongamsa and Tongdosa to be a liberal space, third, the establishment of Vinaya seminary, which was originally part of the comprehensive and combined monastic temple complexes, fourth, the changes in Vinaya seminary during the reformation of the order in 1994, fifth, the aims of Vinaya seminary, and so on.
I hope that this dissertation is helpful for future research on the history of Vinaya seminary in the Jogye monastic order, including the understanding of the Vinaya seminary, the way the curriculum is structured, and the intelligence and background of monks who there, and so on.
