고대 신라에는 자연숭배에 기반한 무교(巫敎)가 존재했다. 이 무교 전통 내에서 종교활동을 지도한 전문가를 무격이라고 했다. 이들은 남녀 무당을 가리키는데, 제사를 관장하고 천문을 관측하고 주술을 행하고 심신치료를 담당했다. 불교는 신라에 전래된 이후 기존 무교 전통과 경쟁하면서 점진적으로 토착화했다. 그 과정에서 자연스럽게 자연숭배를 부분적으로 수용하고 그것을 불교 내의 신앙으로 전환했다. 승려들은 주술이나 제사 집행 등 무격(巫覡)의 역할을 대신하기도 했다. 심지어 불교계는 자신의 세력을 확대하는 과정에서 전통적인 무교의 성소(聖所)를 점유하기도 했다. 신라시대 조성된 많은 사원이 실은 기존 무교의 성소에 건립된 것이다. 신라불교는 순수하게 불교적 세계관을 천명한 것이 아니라 기존 무교 전통을 폭넓게 수용했다. 이 때문에 신라불교는 중층신앙(multiple faiths) 행태를 보여 주었다.
In Ancient Silla, shamanism based on nature worship existed. Before the ancient kingdoms were established, shamanism played an important role in tribal communities. Shamans were experts who guided shamanistic activities. They were in charge of ancestral rites, observed astronomy, performed incantation, and took on psychic healing. Ever since its introduction to Silla, Buddhism competed with the existing shamanistic traditions and gradually indigenized itself. In this process, Buddhism accepted the nature worship partially, and transferred it into the object of faith within Buddhism. At times, Buddhist monks served the role of shamans such as performing incantation or ancestral rites. In the process of expanding their influence, Buddhist world occupied spaces that were traditionally considered sacred in shamanism. Many of the temples built during Silla period were, in fact, constructed on existing shamanistic sancta. This caused intense feud between the Buddhist world and the Shamanistic world. Silla Buddhism did not manifest a purely Buddhist worldview, but widely accommodated existing shamanistic traditions. In that, Silla Buddhism displayed a form of multiple faiths.
