摘要
이 글은 조계종성립을 중심으로 해서 근대조선에서 전개된 종단설립운동에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 기존 연구들은 종단설립운동을 주로 일제 식민지 정책에 대한 저항이라는 관점에서 설명해 왔다. 본고는 조선의 근대화에 따른 불교의 근대화라는 관점에서 살펴보았다. 먼저 사찰령에 대한 근대조선불교도들의 우호적인 태도를 민족의식의 부재 때문이 아니라, 불교가 근대화하는 과정에서 극복되지 못한 불교전통의 답습이라는 측면에서 살펴보았다. 다음으로 사찰령이 정교분리라는 근대적 종교원리에 근거해서 극복되는 과정을 살펴보았다. 이러한 논의들을 통해 본고는 종단설립운동이 정치로부터 종교의 독립성을 확보하기 위한 근대적 종교운동의 성격을 갖는다는 것을 논증했다.
This work is an inquiry into the meaning of the modernity of the movements for establishing religious order, especially Jogye order, during Joseon's modernization period. In general, they have been evaluated as the national movement for independence of the Japanese Imperialism. Here, I examined them as the reformative movements to transform the traditional buddhism into the modern buddhism in the context of 'the encounter between the traditional and the modern'. There are two ways to analyze the modernity of these movements. The one is the decree of temple(寺刹令), the other is the doctrine of the separation of Church and State. The modern Joseon's monks approved the decree of temple as the policy protecting the Joseon buddhism. This approval is on the basis of not the absence of national consciousness but the tradition of Korean buddhism that the buddhist order has been close to the state. The movements for establishing order is the religious reformation to overcome the traditional relationship of the church and state on the basis of the doctrine of the separation of church and state.
