Based on the comparison between charitable affairs of Shanghai Buddhism organizations during the Period of the Republic of China and charitable activities of Shanghai monasteries in modern times in the following aspects:the main rescue object, rescue types and mode, the subject engaged in rescue, and the operating form of charity organizations, the paper draws the conclusion that the lay Buddhist group during the period of the Republic of China are more efficient in social mobilization, professionalism, normative and actual effect, and more worthy of learning and imitation. In addition, this paper draws three lessons:(1) the government should not meddle with social charitable deeds deserved by non-governmental institutions.(2) Buddhist circle should avoid fragmentation and lack of long-term planning in charity, which leads to inefficiency and waste of resources.(3) Releasing captive animals should follow the laws of nature, avoiding detrimental action with good intentions. To ensure the healthy development of the Buddhist charity in the future, this paper suggests that the government should actively encourage private charity development, formulate relevant laws and facilities, take folk charity into government auditing, and strengthen management.
