摘要
15세기는 유교적 이상 국가를 지향하며 등장한 조선왕조에 의해 불교계에 대한 억압 정책이 본격적으로 시행된 시대였다. 이러한 상황 속에서 불교계는 불교 고유의 종교적 의식을 설행하고, 퇴락한 사찰의 중건과 불서의 간행을 지속적으로 수행하는 한편 불교인의 입장에서 유학자들과 꾸준히 교유함으로써 불교적 전통이 존립할 수 있는 기반을 확보하고자 노력하였다. 한편 사상적으로 조선 초기 불교를 대표하는 함허당 득통 기화(1376-1433)는 불교 내적으로는 돈오-점수-증오의 수행론을 역설함으로써 자신이 지눌 사상의 계승자임을 분명하게 드러내었다. 또한 당시의 강력한 배불론에 맞서 적극적으로 불교를 옹호하는 과정에서 불교우월론에 기반한 포괄주의적 유불관계론을 제시함으로써, 선불교적 입장에서 교학 전통을 포괄하는 지눌의 포괄주의적 회통론을 계승하고 있음을 보여주었다.
In 15c, Buddhist society was repressed by the policy of the Joseon Dynasty that appeared pursuing Confucian ideal society. In this situation, Buddhist society endeavored to secure foundation for existence of their traditions by practicing religious rituals of their own, reconstructing dilapidated temples, publishing the Buddhist scriptures, and interacting with Confucian scholars in the position of a Buddhist. Meanwhile, Kihwa(己和 1376-1433), who ideologically represents Buddhism in early Joseon, showed that he is the inheritor of Jinul(知訥)'s philosophy by emphasizing the discipline theory of sudden enlightenment and gradual cultivation. Furthermore, he proposed Buddhism supremacy-based inclusivistic theory of the relationship between Buddhism and Confucianism, which shows that he inherits the inclusivistic harmonizaion theory of Jinul that includes Gyohak(doctrinal studies) tradition in Seon Buddhistic position.
