본 논문은 蒙山德異[1232-1308,南宋末∼元初期 스님]의 간화선 수행관에 관한 중점적 연구이다. 지금까지 몽산덕이에 관한 연구를 종합하면, 크게 세 갈래로 연구되어왔다. 그 첫째로는 고려후기 선수행과 관련하여 몽산의 선법이 미친 영향과 관련한 사학적인 접근이며, 둘째는 몽산덕이의 저술과 관련한 국어학계나 서지학적 연구다. 마지막으로 이들을 바탕으로 한 몽산덕이의 간화선 사상을 살펴 본 연구의 세 가지가 기존연구의 주된 방향이다. 이 중 논자는 지금까지의 연구를 바탕으로 『몽산법어』를 종합정리 체계화함으로써 그의 간화선 수행관을 정립하는데 핵심을 두고 있다. 그 첫 번째로 몽산의 선사로서의 특색을 살펴보고, 그 다음으로 그의 법어에 나타난 간화선 수행의 특성을 간화선 수행단계별로 정리해 보았다. 이를 위해 먼저 그가 말하는 발심관 및 화두관을 살펴보고, 공부과정에서 나타나는 문제점에 대한 그의 해법을 정리했다. 나아가 몽산이 말하는 깨달음이 가까운 경계의 공부경지를 살펴보고 그의 깨달음 이후의 점검관[悟後保任]을 정리하였다. 마지막으로 몽산의 염불화두법의 요지를 살펴보고, 몽산에게 있어 염불을 수용하는 요점이 무엇인지 규명하였다. 이상을 통해 몽산이 그의 법어를 통해 말하고 있는 간화선수행의 핵심을 규명 정리하고자 한 것이 본 논문의 목적이다.
This article is an investigation focusing on Chan Master Mengshan Deyi's (蒙山德異 1232-1308) view of Ganhwaseon. The existing research works done in Korea on the subject of Master Mengshan can be divided into three categories. First, those works done in the historical perspective focusing the influence of his Chan method on the late Goryeo Seon practice; second, those in the linguistic or philological approach, analyzing the master's writings; third and the last, those from the viewpoint of his Ganhwaseon thoughts based on the above researches. The author focuses on the establishment of the master's Ganhwaseon system by examining in a systematic and comprehensive manner Mengshan's Dharm Talk 『蒙山法語』 on the basis of the outcome of the studies hitherto done in this field. To be more specific, this paper reviews some characteristics of Menshan as a Chan master in the first place and then presents key features of his Ganhwaseon as shown in his dharma talks by elucidating his cultivating process. To serve its purpose, the author examined the master’s thought of 'resolution to achieve enlightenment' and 'hwadu', and further discussed his way of solutions to the hindrances during the cultivation. Furthermore, the author investigated the near-enlightenment state he stated and clarified his idea of maintaining practice after enlightenment 悟後保任. Finally the author studied the essentials of Mengshan's chanting-hwadu method and brought to light what is the gist of his combining chanting and Ganhwaseon. In conclusion, the purpose of this paper is to explore the core of Ganhwaseon as described in Mengshan's Dharma Talk
