섭론종에서 정토종으로 전환한 가재(迦才)는 도작이 찬술한 『안락집(安樂集)』에 드러난 내용에서 12부의 경전과 5부 2게송의 논장을 분석하였다. 그리고 자기의 견해를 덧붙여 기술하면서 세간의 대중들이 용이하게 이해할 수 있도록 논을 명백하게 귀납하고 비교해서 『정토론(淨土論)』으로 재구성하였다. 본 논서의 내용은 다분히 섭론종의 이론과 소부의 기타 경론의 이치를 입증한 실례를 들어서 논술하였다. 이와 더불어 문답의 방식으로 해답함으로써 당시 정토법문이 발전하는 과정에 상당히 중요한 지위와 영향을 점유하였다. 특히 정토삼부경에 표출된 정토에 왕생할 요인의 모순과 충돌하는 내용을 해소시켰다. 『정토론』에서 논하는 그 핵심을 말한다면, 먼저 삼신정토의 관점을 논한 다음에 어떤 사람들이 정토에 왕생할 수 있고, 다음에 어떤 수행을 통해서 정토에 왕생할 수 있으며, 끝으로 어떤 이치에 의지해서 정토에 왕생할 수 있는지를 논하였다. 이러한 논의에 대해서 결론적으로 말하면, 먼저 정념(正念)을 보호하여 유지한 사람들, 다음에 보리심(菩提心)을 발한 사람들, 끝으로 아미타불의 타력에 의지한 인연을 원만하게 구족한 사람들이 바로 정토에 왕생할 수 있다는 것이다. 이처럼 가재는 정토법문을 가지고 원만한 해석을 시도한 다음에 당시 정토를 연구한 사람들에게 지대한 영향을 가져다주었다. 이러한 가재의 정토왕생에 대한 이론은 충분히 연구할 가치가 인정되는 부분이다.
