This research is to explore the practice of the Four Immeasureables (brahmavihāras), or loving-kindness (mettā), compassion (karuṇā), empathetic joy (mudita) and equanimity (upekkhā). The study will argue the practice of the Four Immeasureables is a path practiced and taught by the Buddha himself. Through eons of spiritual practice, the Buddha gains supreme Enlightenment and then preaches to the world of the Path for the Cession of Suffering. The Buddha exemplifies the Bodhisattva path and shows the true the path to Buddhahood. The Chinese translation of the Buddhism scriptures are referred by this research. This research focuses on the dimension and the scope of Four Immeasurable Minds. The study will first focus on a reviewing of the Agama to discuss the essence of the Four Immeasurables. And then the study will look at the discourse of the Four Immeasurables in the Visuddhimagga to analyze the method and application of the Four Immeasurables. Thirdly, it will analyze the discussion of Four Immeasurables in the Mahāprajnāpāramitāśāstra; this will show spiritual benefit of Samadhi practice and the infinite compassion of Bodhisattvas. Finally, the study examine the Four Immeasurables from the perspective of Humanistic Buddhism in order to relate this ancient practice to the modern-day life. The virtues of self-benefiting and benefiting others are realized and unfolded in the mundane world.
