| 摘要 | 公元四至五世紀正是佛教中國化最為關鍵的時期之一，而此一時期出生於現在中國山西省長治市襄垣縣，俗姓龔的出家僧人法顯在很多方面都在此一偉大的歷史進程中留下了自己深深的烙印。正如我們在本論文集中將要看到的，法顯的意義並非僅僅只是身兼得道高僧、虔誠信徒、偉大的旅行家與卓越的佛經翻譯家，而真正在於他所具有的典範意義，故而在其身後不但吸引了一代又一代像玄奘、義淨這樣的追隨者來步武法顯的足跡，更重要的是樹立了一座求法僧群體堅韌不拔、雖千萬里而吾其往矣的精神豐碑。
我們也正是秉承此一宗旨，於2017 年3 月25–29 日舉辦了題名為「從襄垣到錫蘭：漢僧法顯 (337–422) 其生平與遺產」的法顯國際研討會。此次會議共吸引了來自十三個國家與地區的共三十三位佛教學者，因此是一次具有相當代表性的法顯國際學術會議。本次會議仍可算是對於過去百年來法顯學研究的一次相當全面的檢閱。而我們在整部論文集的最後，所附錄的過去法顯研究的目錄，也可以說是對於這個說法的一個較為用心的腳註。本次研討會參會文章的研究範圍除了包括傳統的法顯生平歷史、翻譯文獻，更重要的是將法顯放在了整個南亞、中亞與東亞時代大背景之下加以考察，故而具有相當恢闊的宏觀視野。通過法顯記錄，我們可以以這個參照物來作為研究原點，將研究範圍擴展到法顯時代的印度次大陸與錫蘭島的宗教與社會學，以此來透視當時這個較乏歷史記載的區域之中的微觀史實現象。這種研究模式，與會者也同樣將之貫徹到了中亞與東亞法顯時代的宗教學與社會學研究之中。除了共時性的宗教學研究，本次會議參會者也非常注重歷時性的探討，因為法顯所具有的典範性重要意義使其在其身後留下了一個巨大的影像遺存。
在這本英文法顯會議論文集中，我們收錄了7篇英文文章和6篇原為中文的英譯文章，以便向英語國家的佛教學者展示這次會議的主要成果。 |
