The Buddhist practice is divided into two general categories. One is the faith in the Pure Land practice, and the other the meditation practice with self-effort. These two different ways have their own peculiarity yet share identical and corresponding features between the two. The characteristic feature of the former is to gain enlightenment by relying on Amitabha's vow and compassion. That of the latter is that Zen practice helps to accomplish its goal, that is, enlightenment by putting one's own effort into it. The Pure Land practice and Seon are thought to be identical and corresponding in that the purpose and process of these two are reciprocal although the ways of practice are different. For this reason, Pure Land and Zen are considered to share the ultimate sameness. This relationship between the two has been proven by several Chinese and Korean Zen masters from Corea and Joseon Dynasties, such as YoungMyung YeonSoo(永明延壽) and SeoSan HyuChung(西山休靜) respectively. For example, a Chinese master GyungBong JongMil(圭峰宗密) organized the practice of the Buddhist invocation into four different types. As proven, the meditative factor included in the practice of the invocation shows that meditation(Seon) and invocations work together according to the complementary principle and therefore share the ultimate consentience.
